Toll roads operator Transurban in April 2014 paid $A7.05bn to acquire the Queensland Motorways business from state enterprise QIC. It had formed an alliance with AustralianSuper and the Tawreed Investments sovereign wealth fund of Abu Dhabi, and won out over a consortium of Hastings Funds Management and Spanish group Abertis. The latter’s CEO, Francisco Reynes, now says he was surprised that Transurban gained approval from the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission. He also believes the company should focus more on overseas toll road assets

Borghetti urges easing of airport caps

There is currently an upper limit of 80 take-offs and landings per hour at Sydney Airport, which the Federal Government has said it will not amend. However John Borghetti, CEO of carrier Virgin Australia, says the accompanying cap of 20 movements for each quarter of an hour means that even the figure of 80 is rarely reached. He argues that during normal working hours the total could be boosted to 90 without any adverse impact on residents, and a recent study for the New South Wales and Federal Governments also advocated a lift to 85

The Victorian Court of Appeal heard that delaying the signing of contracts could cost the East West Link toll road project EUR100 million ($A145 million). The contracts have to be signed by 1 October 2014 to avoid a loss from foreign exchange risks. A Brunswick resident is trying to prevent the signing of contracts until his appeal can be reheard. The Victorian Government agreed not to sign contracts before the court’s decision on 29 September
