Seven West Media’s chief digital officer Clive Dicken is not unduly concerned about YouTube’s decision to provide free access to its original TV content. Dickens says traditional TV broadcasters are looking to adopt YouTube’s advertising-supported model for streaming video. He also notes that all forms of TV are growing, despite initial fears that subscription video-on-demand services would result in the demise of traditional broadcasters. YouTube’s premium content will be viewable for free on smart TVs from 2019.

Telstra has advised that Foxtel’s new Kayo Sports video-on-demand service will be available to users of its own streaming platform. Telstra’s Michael Ackland says the telco does not expect Kayo to cannibalise the audience for its own sports streaming content, which includes AFL, NRL and A-League matches. Kayo subscriptions are priced from $25 per month, but Ackland notes that Telstra’s Live Pass subscribers will be able to access Kayo for free. It will also be available via the Telstra TV device.

Participants in the beta-testing phase of Kayo Sports were generally positive about Foxtel’s new dedicated sports streaming video-on-demand service. Kayo Sports CEO Julian Ogrin says the subscription service was rigorously tested prior to its official launch, and he is confident that it will not experience the problems that plagued Optus’s live streams of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Original article by Andrew White
The Australian – Page: 21 : 31-Oct-18

Britain’s proposed digital services tax is primarily aimed at US-based technology companies, but experts suggest that traditional Australian media companies and online classifieds groups could be hit if the federal government introduces a similar tax. News Corp Australia, Fairfax Media, Seek, Domain and Carsales.com are among the local companies that could potentially be affected by any move to impose a digital services tax. The government will shortly release a discussion paper on the issue.

News Corp Australia has called for "structural intervention" to curb what it claims is Google’s anti-competitive behaviour. It did so in a submission to an Australian Competition & Consumer Commission inquiry into digital platforms. Such intervention could include having Google broken up, a suggestion that was made by the European parliament’s committee on economic and monetary affairs in April. Google has already been fined billions of dollars by European regulators for anti-competitive behaviour.

The internet as a whole rather than Google specifically has hurt the business model of traditional media companies, according to the technology giant’s vice-president of news, Richard Gingras. He says the Google News Initiative demonstrates the company’s commitment to publishers and quality journalism. Gingras adds that Google’s core businesses of web search and advertising technology are highly dependent on the internet’s "ecosystem" continuing to feature quality content.

Original article by Supratim Adhikari
The Australian – Page: 19 : 9-Aug-18

Optus will continue to pursue deals for live streaming of soccer matches despite the technical problems that marred its coverage of the FIFA World Cup. Optus CEO Allen Lew has attributed the problems with its Optus Sports app to "compatibility issues" rather than the impact of customer demand on its network. He adds that the app has undergone rigorous testing and describes it as "world class". Optus’s net profit after tax fell by 3.5 per cent to $154m in the June quarter, while operating revenue was six per cent higher than previously at $2.2bn.

However, she has conceded that Facebook cannot completely remove fake news from its platform. Brown has also indicated that Facebook will shortly launch its Watch video-on-demand service in Australia.
