Foxtel has revealed plans to launch a lower-cost version of its Play streaming service in December 2016. The new product is expected to be offered at a similar price to rival subscription video-on-demand services such as Netflix and Stan, and Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh is confident that it will primarily be taken up by non-Foxtel households rather than current customers. Meanwhile, Foxtel has commissioned a new TV version of "Picnic At Hanging Rock" and secured a new content deal with HBO.

Australian telco Optus launched its streaming coverage of the English Premier League season on the weekend of 13-14 August 2016. A spokesperson has indicated that just three per cent of its customers had reported problems with the coverage. However, many people used social media to criticise the telco’s EPL coverage. The complaints included claims that there was a one-minute delay in the coverage, despite it supposedly being live, and the poor picture quality of the streaming video.

The media group will instead publish its own digital subscription data in ASX releases. The AMA has reported that subscriptions to the digital edition of "The Age" fell by 6.3 per cent in the March 2016 quarter and 3.4 per cent in the year to March, while "Sydney Morning Herald" digital subscriptions grew by 0.9 per cent in the year to March.

Cancellations, price rises slow subscriber growth at Netflix

Original article by Max Mason
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 18 : 20-Jul-16

US-based Netflix has posted a profit of $US40.8 million for the June 2016 quarter, which is 54.8 per cent higher than the same period in 2015. However, Netflix increased its global subscriber base by just 1.7 million during the quarter, compared with its own expectations that it would gain 2.5 million customers. An increase in its prices also resulted in a rise in Netflix’s customer churn rate. The company has noted that lower growth in international subscribers was to be expected after it launched in markets such as Australia in 2015.

Media groups are increasingly seeking to generate traffic to their websites by allowing their content to be republished by companies such as Google and Facebook. However, Facebook recently made changes that give priority to content that is posted by individuals rather than media companies. Seven West Media CEO Tim Worner notes that Facebook and Google are solely content aggregators and do not create their own content, and argues that they should reinvest some of their Australian profits into producing content.
