Analysts have suggested that senior executives at Telstra could leave the telco after being overlooked as the successor to CEO David Thodey. CFO Andy Penn will replace Thodey on 1 May 2015, but the telco has a number of senior executive who have the potential to be CEO, and there is speculation that some may leave to pursue CEO roles elsewhere. Meanwhile, Cynthia Whelan and Mark Hall are regarded as the most likely internal candidates to replace Penn as CFO

A Senate inquiry into the new metadata retention bill on 29 January 2015 heard from Federal Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim. He argued that the authorities empowered to access the details of telephone calls and internet sessions would usually do so within six to 12 months, and it was therefore not necessary to force telcos and ISPs to store the records for two years. Vivienne Thom, the Inspector-General of Intelligence & Security, also voiced fears the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation may keep the metadata of people no longer deemed a threat

Australian telcos Telstra and Singtel Optus now have access to more parts of the wireless frequency spectrum, enabling them to boost their 4G mobile telephony and internet offerings. The combined spending of $A2bn on the 700Mhz and 2.5Ghz bands will according to experts at Morgan Stanley trigger substantial growth in the number of subscribers using data plans for mobile devices such as tablet computers. Telstra in particular will benefit, and lift its market share to 54% during 2014-15. Users will experience more generous data allowances but few price falls

TPG must pay for the right to compete

Australian Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull says rivals to the national broadband network will have to help fund the building of the infrastructure in remote areas via a levy. The charge is intended to prevent private telcos from undercutting operator NBN Co in lucrative urban markets. Turnbull says the project has proceeded well in the last year but remains risky. Meanwhile he should soon have a response to the regulatory reform requested by Australia Post in order to provide two types of letter delivery service

Fewer mobile owners use it for all work and no play

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 16-Jan-15

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that just 7.4 per cent of Australians mobile phone owners aged 14+ used their phone "mainly for business" in the year to September 2014. This compares with about 10 per cent from 2010 to 2011. The proportion of people using their phone "about equally" for business and personal use remained steady until 2014, when there was a slight increase to 13.3%. Around three quarters of those who use their phone about equally for business and personal reasons are paying for it themselves, with only one in four paid for by employers

Terror failings ‘expose data flaws’

Original article by Jared Owens
The Australian – Page: 2 : 13-Jan-15

Australian Attorney-General George Brandis claims it is "urgent" for telcos to be required to keep customers’ telephone and internet records for a minimum of two years. Critics of the Government’s data retention proposals say the Sydney siege and Paris terrorism attacks show that the reforms cannot safeguard people against extremists. Senator Scott Ludlam of the Australian Greens points out that the authorities were familiar with the perpetrators in both Sydney and Paris
