Australian telcos Telstra and Singtel Optus now have access to more parts of the wireless frequency spectrum, enabling them to boost their 4G mobile telephony and internet offerings. The combined spending of $A2bn on the 700Mhz and 2.5Ghz bands will according to experts at Morgan Stanley trigger substantial growth in the number of subscribers using data plans for mobile devices such as tablet computers. Telstra in particular will benefit, and lift its market share to 54% during 2014-15. Users will experience more generous data allowances but few price falls

TPG must pay for the right to compete

Original article by Joanna Heath, David Ramli
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 3 : 21-Jan-15

Australian Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull says rivals to the national broadband network will have to help fund the building of the infrastructure in remote areas via a levy. The charge is intended to prevent private telcos from undercutting operator NBN Co in lucrative urban markets. Turnbull says the project has proceeded well in the last year but remains risky. Meanwhile he should soon have a response to the regulatory reform requested by Australia Post in order to provide two types of letter delivery service

Terror failings ‘expose data flaws’

Original article by Jared Owens
The Australian – Page: 2 : 13-Jan-15

Australian Attorney-General George Brandis claims it is "urgent" for telcos to be required to keep customers’ telephone and internet records for a minimum of two years. Critics of the Government’s data retention proposals say the Sydney siege and Paris terrorism attacks show that the reforms cannot safeguard people against extremists. Senator Scott Ludlam of the Australian Greens points out that the authorities were familiar with the perpetrators in both Sydney and Paris

A Facebook post of Australian Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young has been manipulated in such a way as to discredit her as a politician. The matter is being investigated by the Australian Federal Police. Hanson-Young stated in the original message that she sympathised with the victims of the Martin Place siege in Sydney, while the fake message describes gunman Man Horan Monis as a "peace loving" individual who was wronged by a "cruel government"

Original article by David Ramli
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 3 : 6-Jan-15

New restrictions on companies building fast broadband networks have resulted in TPG Telecom stopping sales of its superfast broadband plan. Australian Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced the extra restrictions on 14 December 2014. His motivation was to protect the interests of the national broadband network operator, NBN Co. TPG stated on 5 January 2015 that the company was unable to meet the new requirements and that consequently new orders for the service will not be accepted

Telstra recently renegotiated its deal with NBN Co, the entity rolling out the national broadband network. It will still be worth $A11.2bn but involve different technology, due to the September 2013 election win of the Australian Government. The telco will also benefit from a separate move by NBN Co to award it half or more of the design and planning contracts for the infrastructure project, and some construction work. Pending confirmation by Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, the agreements may be signed on 19 December 2014

Telstra has announced that the value of its new deal with NBN Co will be $A11bn, just as for the old one that was superseded after the Australian Government won the September 2013 federal election. Under the changed agreement Telstra will make its existing copper lines infrastructure available to the entity in charge of the national broadband network roll-out, and there may also be an added opportunity for the telco to supply construction services. According to Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull this would be strictly on commercial terms

BHP Billiton has ruled out buying the South32.com domain name, which is owned by a company based in Malibu. It is believed to have demanded $A10m to surrender the name. BHP recently revealed South32 as the name of the spin-off that will hold its non-core assets, and says it was not willing to pay the price being sought by the domain name’s owner. Experts say BHP should have ensured that it owned the .com domain as well as related domain names

Australian Attorney-General George Brandis and Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull will present their copyright law proposals to federal Cabinet on 9 December 2014. The proposed laws are not as tough as expected by rights holders. Instead of being penalised, illicit downloaders will receive written messages warning them that they are breaching copyright laws.
