The Australian Government aims to soon pass new laws that will force telcos and ISPs to store metadata for 24 months, to boost national security. It has now emerged that a study has been commissioned from PricewaterhouseCoopers by the Attorney-General’s Department, of the projected cost burden for the sector that will be created by the implementation of the necessary IT solutions. Second-ranked telco Singtel Optus has put this at between $A30m and $A200m

Nasdaq-listed real estate web site operator Move is being acquired by News Corp for $US950m ($A1.08bn). News Corp will own 80% of the business and the remainder is to be held by Australian-listed REA Group, in which News Corp has a 61.6% stake. News Corp CEO Robert Thomson says the company will use its media assets in the US to promote and create synergies with Move, which had revenue of $US227m in 2013-14. The largest share of the online US property classifieds market is held by Zillow, of which Australian James Packer owns 9.4%

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that nine per cent of Australians aged 14+ with a home internet connection downloaded TV programs in an average four-week period during the year to June 2014. Meanwhile, seven per cent downloaded feature-length movies, nine per cent streamed TV and four per cent streamed movies. The survey also shows that those with an unlimited data allowance are less likely to say they have downloaded or streamed movies or TV shows than those with a capped data allowance of at least 100GB

TPG enters ring with Foxtel, FetchTV

Craig Levy, of TPG, said that the company has provided internet-protocol TV (IPTV) for more than five years, but lacks content. Optus in download fast lane

Singtel Optus has upgraded its 4G mobile network with LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation technology. The telco has indicated that trials of the technology achieved download rates of 160Mbps, compared with a maximum potential download speed of 150Mbps for existing 4G networks. Current mobile devices cannot achieve the higher download speeds, although Optus expects to offer them in coming months

More Aussies comfortable giving out personal info online – despite increased concern for privacy

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 23 per cent of Australians aged 14+ were comfortable giving personal details over the internet in the year to June 2014. This compares with 19 per cent in the year to June 2011. Meanwhile, 34 per cent were comfortable giving out credit card details online, an increase of three per cent since 2011. The survey also shows that 65% of people who use the internet more than once a day are worried about invasion of their privacy through new technology, compared with 71% of those who use the internet daily or a few times per week

ACCC orange light on Wotif takeover

However, the competition regulator has expressed concern that the $A703m deal may lead to an increase in commission rates in the accommodation sector.
