The latest jobs data may strengthen the case for the Reserve Bank of Australia to begin lifting the cash rate in late 2018. Some 62,000 jobs were created in November, and 383,000 in the last year, while the unemployment rate was steady at 5.4 per cent. The Australian Bureau of Statistics data also supports the central bank’s view that economic growth will be above its trend rate in 2018. However, Tom Kennedy of JP Morgan says the RBA is likely to keep interest rates on hold while the unemployment rate remains at its current level, while George Tharenou of UBS does not expect a rate rise until 2019.

Austrac filed an amended statement of claim against the Commonwealth Bank of Australia on 14 December, alleging that there have been further breaches of anti-money laundering and terrorism financing laws since it first launched legal action against the bank. The new allegations include claims that CBA allowed money to be withdrawn from a bank account even though there were suspicions that the account-holder had links to terrorism. CBA has admitted to more than 53,000 of the breaches of money-laundering laws that Austrac had alleged in its original statement of claim.

CEO Shayne Elliott concedes that the ANZ Bank’s earnings will be lower following recent asset sales, although he believes that refocusing the group is in the best interests of shareholders. ANZ shares closed 1.1 per cent higher at $A28.82 on 12 December after it announced the sale of its life insurance division to Zurich for $A2.85bn. ANZ had sold the OnePath business to IOOF Holdings earlier in 2017. Elliott has indicated that ANZ could potentially use the proceeds of the latest deal to finance a share buyback.

Australian Prudential Regulation Authority chairman Wayne Byers has welcomed finalisation of the Basel IV reforms governing the global capital requirements for banks. He says Australian banks are in a good position to meet the Basel IV reforms, a comment echoed by Victor German of Macquarie. Craig Williams of Citigroup says the reforms have a longer implementation time (2027) than was expected, while they are not as onerous as had been forecast.

The latest GDP data has prompted financial markets to price in an 84 per cent chance that the Reserve Bank of Australia will increase the cash rate by the end of 2018, down from 94 per cent previously. The economy expanded by a lower-than-expected 0.6 per cent in the September 2017 quarter, while year-on-year growth rose from 1.9 per cent to 2.8 per cent. Westpac CEO Brian Hartzer says the issue of a royal commission has been a key concern for US investors in recent weeks. Meanwhile, the Opposition and the Australian Greens have urged the Government to broaden the inquiry’s terms of reference.

The ANZ Bank has dismissed one of its overseas employees after he had sexually harassed a female employee from another bank. The incident occurred outside of work hours. His dismissal was reported to staff in an email from ANZ’s Kathryn van der Merwe; the same email also noted that other staff had been sacked for using illicit drugs at a work-connected event. Van der Merwe stressed in the email that ANZ staff could be dismissed for illegal activities, even if they occurred outside of work time.

OECD urges RBA to start lifting rates

Original article by Jacob Greber

The OECD expects the Reserve Bank of Australia to lift interest rates in the second half of 2018, even if the inflation rate remains within the RBA’s target of two to three per cent. The OECD argues that rates will need to be increased in order to address concerns about Australia’s debt levels and to dampen down its housing market. The OECD has also called on the federal government to stick to its goal of improving the budget.

Sydney’s superstar house prices explained

Original article by Vesna Poljak
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 13 : 23-Nov-17

Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe says there are certain cities whose house prices increase a lot more than other cities in their countries. Lowe says this trend has been observed by his colleagues at other central banks, and the general consensus is that people are willing to pay higher prices for houses in some cities because of increased "economic or social returns" to be gained by living in them . Such places have been dubbed "superstar" cities, and Lowe says they include cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Vancouver, Toronto, and San Francisco

RBA governor Philip Lowe says banks needed push on interest-only lending

Original article by Vesna Poljak
The Australian Financial Review – Page: Online : 22-Nov-17

Reserve Bank of Australia governor Philip Lowe says there is still a place for interest-only mortgage lending, but he believes the recent regulatory crackdown in this area has been a success. Speaking at the Australian Business Economists dinner on 21 November, Lowe said some banks had told him that they had welcomed the crackdown, which had prompted him to ask why they had not taken the initiative themselves and done something about it. Commenting on the prospects for the Australian economy, Lowe expects growth of above three per cent in both 2018 and 2019.
