A special snap SMS Morgan Poll has found that 52 per cent of Australians believe that Australians convicted of drug trafficking in another country and sentenced to death should be executed. The survey, which was carried out from 23-27 January 2015, also shows that 62 per cent of Australians believe that the Federal Government should not do more to stop the execution of Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan in Indonesia. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan notes that 60 per cent of men are in favour of the death penalty for convicted drug traffickers, compared with only 46% of women

Over a million Australians now use two mobile phones

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that six per cent of Australians aged 14+ now use two separate mobile telephones. The survey, which was carried out in the year to November 2014, also shows that 53 per cent have a phone that is paid for by their place of work and one which they pay for themselves. Meanwhile, more than 50 per cent of Australians who use two mobile phones are signed up with two different telcos, while 58 per cent have a post-paid plan for both handsets

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 37 per cent of Australians aged 18+ drank beer in an average four-week period during the year to September 2014. The survey also shows that 17 per cent of the nation’s beer drinkers consumed Carlton Draught, followed by Victoria Bitter (12 per cent) and XXXX Gold (12 per cent). Meanwhile, 94 per cent of Cascade Premium Light drinkers agree with the statement " I consider myself to be Australian", compared with 80 per cent of Australian beer drinkers overall

Rate cut likely as spending slows

There was a 2.4 per cent increase in the Westpac-Melbourne Institute index of consumer sentiment in January 2015. The index rose from 91.1 in December to 93.2 per cent in seasonally adjusted terms. Meanwhile, the ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Index has increased by 1.4 per cent to 113.6, although the data is not seasonally adjusted. Westpac’s chief economist Bill Evans expects the cash rate to be reduced in both February and March

Budget deficit saps confidence

Roy Morgan Research’s business confidence index has fallen to its lowest level since August 2011. The index fell to 105.3 in December 2014, compared with 123 in November. Roy Morgan’s Norman Morris says business confidence was adversely affected by the Australian Government’s forecast of a $A40bn Budget deficit for 2014-15. A survey by the Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry also shows that there has been a sharp fall in business conditions

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 18 per cent of Australians aged 14+ visited at least one art gallery or museum on their last holiday. The survey, which was carried out in the two years to October 2014, also shows that 36 per cent of Australians who went overseas for their last holiday visited at least one art galley or museum. Some 75 per cent who travelled to Europe for their last holiday visited an art gallery or museum. Meanwhile, 14 per cent of Australians whose last holiday was domestic visited at least one museum or art gallery

Business satisfaction with banks reaches new high – but big four lag behind smaller banks

A Roy Morgan Research Business Single Source survey has found that the satisfaction level of the business customers of Australia’s four major banks was 67.6 per cent in the six months to November 2014. Satisfaction with non-big four banks was 72.2 per cent. The overall satisfaction level of Australian business banking customers is at a record high of 69.6 per cent, compared with 61.4 per cent in 2010. Westpac had the highest satisfaction rating in November (71.6 per cent). Meanwhile, the satisfaction level of the personal customers of Australian banks is now 82.8 per cent, a 6.5 per cent increase since 2010

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 40 per cent of Australians aged 14+ say they almost always or occasionally watch cricket on TV. The survey, which was carried out in the year to September 2014, also shows that 35 per cent of Australians watch tennis and 23 per cent watch soccer. Meanwhile, 52 per cent of Australians aged 65+ almost always or occasionally watch cricket on TV, and 47 per cent watch tennis. In contrast, soccer is most popular among the 35-49 age group (26 per cent)

Australian employment at record high in December driven by a record high level of part-time employment

A Roy Morgan Research survey on Australia’s labour market has found that the real unemployment rate was 10.9 per cent in December 2014. The number of people in the workforce now totals a record 12,901,000 (up 266,000 since December 2013), while the number of people who are underemployed has risen by 154,000 in the last 12 months to 1,246,000 (9.7 per cent). The official unemployment rate was 6.2 per cent in November. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says the high level of unemployment and underemployment means the Federal Government must look seriously at industrial relations reform
