In a first for Australian politics, a digital candidate powered by data insights from real Australians has entered the Federal election race, to shift our national conversation from short-term problems to long-term solutions. Australia is stuck in a cycle of political short-termism and The Perfect Candidate (www.theperfectcandidate.org.au) is an unbiased voice of the people, driven by the most authoritative research ever released on Australians’ concerns. The Perfect Candidate is driven by data not bias and launching their campaign today in Sydney, they aim to empower Australians to hold our politicians to account and to ignite discussion amongst leaders and citizens about our long-term future. Created by the Australian Futures Project, a non-partisan, not-for profit organisation dedicated to ending short-termism in Australia, The Perfect Candidate allows Australians to search and understand key concerns of their local electorate and the whole country. Using data and analysis from Roy Morgan, policy statements on the websites of the political parties and independents and insights from the Australian Futures Project, Australians can compare these concerns to what is being prioritised and talked about by politicians, ultimately holding them to account.

Roy Morgan surveys of more than 40,000 Australians, broken down by federal electorates, show a much higher share of Canberrans, Melburnians and Sydneysiders nominate global warming and climate change as one of their top three election issues than voters in Brisbane and regional Queensland. Almost 38 per cent of voters in the nation’s capital, 31 per cent of Melbourne’s voters and nearly 28 per cent of Sydneysiders include the issue of climate change as one of their three top issues in the Morgan survey, compared to just 22 per cent in Brisbane and 17 per cent in regional Queensland. Nationally global warming and climate change is the fourth most important issue, nominated by 25 per cent, the survey – commissioned by the Australian Futures Project, a non-profit backed by wealthy families and La Trobe University and "dedicated to ending short-termism in Australia" – finds.

Labor to have higher tax burden but bigger surpluses, says Bowen

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 4 : 10-Apr-19

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen will use his Budget reply speech on 10 April to argue that the federal government could not deliver on its tax cuts package while retaining a surplus over the next decade. He will state that the government’s projected surpluses in coming years are based on spending cuts elsewhere in the Budget starting in the 2023-24 financial year. Bowen will also note that tax revenue would be higher under a Labor government, but it would still be low compared to other OECD nations and some previous Coalition governments.

US-based Wynn Resorts has advised that it will not proceed with a potential takeover bid for Australian-listed Crown Resorts. The two groups are believed to have been holding confidential talks for several months, and Crown informed the ASX of the negotiations on 9 April. Wynn Resorts has cited the "premature disclosure" of these discussions for its decision to cease all negotiations with Crown. Businessman James Packer, who has a 46.1 per cent stake in Crown, would have emerged with a 10 per cent stake in Wynn Resorts if the deal had proceeded.

Federal Environment Minister Melissa Price has approved the groundwater management plan for Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine. However, the groundwater plan must still be approved by the Queensland government, and state Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch says there are still several "uncertainties" regarding the plan. She has also expressed concern that lobbying by National Party MPs to approve the plan may have constituted political interference, a claim that has been rejected by Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

The Australian – Page: 4 : 10-Apr-19

The Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining & Energy Union is currently the subject of 38 separate court cases launched by the Australian Building & Construction Commission. The militant union has already been fined some $3.29m so far in the 2018-19 financial year. The ABCC’s current cases against the CFMMEU include allegations that it engaged in unlawful industrial action and breached right-of-entry laws at a building site in Victoria. A union official is also alleged to have racially abused a construction site supervisor in Perth. Labor intends to abolish the ABCC if it wins the federal election.

An ABC investigation has revealed that the ACTU and the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining & Energy Union are co-owners of Melbourne-based public opinion polling firm uComms. A spokeswoman for the ACTU has rejected concerns about a conflict of interests, but the University of Sydney’s Professor Simon Jackman says polling firms should disclose any political connections in their ownership structure. Some clients uComms are believed to have expressed their intention to cease using the firm for polling in the wake of the revelations. Tomorrow ABIX will publish details of who owns each of the major market research and polling companies which survey in Australia.

Three wasted years since Abbott stopped the boats

Original article by Judith Sloan
The Australian – Page: 12 : 9-Apr-19

The current federal government had three important achievements under Tony Abbott, but it has arguably achieved little since, at least when it comes to economic reform. The mining tax was abolished under Abbott, as was the carbon pricing scheme, while asylum-seeker boats were stopped. The company tax rate for small business has been cut post-Abbott, but little has happened in the way of industrial relations reform. Meanwhile, regulated immigration "has been open slather".
