Green Energy Markets says renewable sources are likely to account for 50 per cent of Australia’s energy supply by 2030. The energy consultancy estimates that renewables could account for 78 per cent of the nation’s energy mix by 2030 if the current take-up rate of rooftop solar panels and investment in wind and solar farms is sustained. A recent report from the United Nations concluded that Australia and another seven G20 countries will not meet their 2030 renewable energy targets.

Eslake warns on wage crisis ramifications

Original article by Anna Patty
The Age – Page: 33 : 29-Nov-18

Australian economist Saul Eslake says the business sector’s push for economic reform is being undermined by the low growth in wages. Eslake argues that the general public is becoming less receptive to reforms such as free trade, deregulation and company tax cuts in an era of sluggish wage growth. Eslake has contributed to a new book titled "The Wages Crisis in Australia". Its editors have argued the case for changes to the Fair Work Act, including expanding the definition of an "employee" to include anyone who provides labour and allowing enterprise bargaining at industry level.

Michael O’Brien and John Pesutto have declared that they will contest the Liberal Party of Victoria’s leadership following the resignation of Opposition leader Matthew Guy in the wake of the election rout. However, Pesutto may be ousted from the seat of Hawthorn, with Labor candidate John Kennedy taking a narrow lead in the latest vote counting. Independent MP Kerryn Phelps has declined to release legal advice regarding her eligibility to be in parliament, but says she will do so if she is referred to the High Court. Phelps adds that she is examining legal advice on the eligibility of Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton and will decide whether to support his referral to the High Court in due course. Meanwhile, crossbencher Andrew Wilkie says every MP whose eligibility to be in parliament is in doubt should be referred to the High Court at the same time.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has indicated that an improved Budget position will allow the federal government to increase its investment in essential services. Amongst other things, Morrison has flagged a $37m funding increase for schools over 10 years and an extra $30bn for hospitals over five years. The Budget bottom line has been bolstered by higher revenue, but Martin Whetton of the ANZ Bank says the government may opt to use some of this windfall to finance new spending initiatives in the lead-up to the 2019 election.

The federal government will require the support of at least two crossbenchers to pass bills in the lower house after Victorian MP Julia Banks resigned from the Liberal Party to become an independent. Banks’ defection to the crossbench means the Coalition has just 73 seats in the House of Representatives. This could give Labor sufficient support to refer Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton to the High Court over his eligibility to be in Parliament. The government in turn has questioned the eligibility of several Labor MPs. Banks has promised to support the government on issues of confidence and supply.

A federal election seems likely to be held on either 11 or 18 May, after the government announced that it will bring forward the 2019 Budget to 2 April. The government is also set to post the first Budget surplus since 2007-08 on the back of higher tax revenue. The Treasury has previously forecast a surplus of $2.2bn in 2019-20, following a deficit of $14.5bn in 2018-19. Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen advocates greater action on Budget repair due to the downside risks to the global economy.
