Union living wage an $8bn hit on bosses

The Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry estimates that the ACTU’s proposal for a "living wage" would cost between $A5bn and $A8bn a year. The ACCI’s Scott Barklamb warns that fixing a living wage at 60 per cent of the median wage by 2020 would require annual increases in the minimum wage that are double the 3.3 per cent rise announced by the Fair Work Commission in 2017. He adds that the living wage proposal would result in job losses and could threaten the viability of some businesses.

2.59m Australians unemployed or under-employed in January

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 6-Feb-18

A Roy Morgan survey shows that 1.219 million Australians were unemployed (9.1% of the workforce) in January 2018, a decrease of 76,000 (down 0.6%) on a year ago. In addition, 1.371 million Australians (10.2% of the workforce) were under-employed, working part-time and looking for more work, a rise of 264,000 in a year. In total, 2.59 million Australians were unemployed or under-employed in January. The figures also show that 12,236,000 Australians were employed in January – an increase of 116,000 over the past year. The Roy Morgan real unemployment figures are substantially higher than the current ABS estimate of 5.5% for December 2017. Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine says jobs growth in calendar year 2017 was driven entirely by growth in part-time employment, which may partly explain why Australians do not believe that the monthly ABS unemployment estimates are accurate.

The Australian Building & Construction Commission says construction firms may be ineligible to tender for federal government projects if workers display union slogans or logos on employer-issued clothing and equipment. The revised national construction code, which was released in 2016, includes more strict restrictions on displaying union-related logos and slogans than the 2013 code. Dave Noonan of the Construction, Forestry, Mining & Energy Union says the ABCC’s "anti-union ideology" has not changed since Stephen McBurney replaced Nigel Hadgkiss as commissioner.

Wage growth to pick up

Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison argues that a proposed across-the-board reduction in the company tax rate will boost wages and job security, noting that US companies have already begun increasing wages in the wake of the Trump administration’s tax reforms. He has called on businesses to promote the benefits of the proposed company tax cuts for the broader economy. Morrison has also indicated that financing personal income tax cuts via an increase in the goods and services tax will not be on the Coalition’s policy agenda for the next federal election.

Living-wage bid could be death of businesses

Original article by Ewin Hannan
The Australian – Page: 1 & 2 : 2-Feb-18

Scott Barklamb of the Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry says small businesses in particular would face a big increase in wage costs if a future government adopted the ACTU’s proposal for a "living wage". The Federal Opposition has indicated that it may consider permanently setting the minimum wage at a proportion of the median wage, although it has not specified what this would be. The ACTU’s target for a living wage is 60 per cent of the median wage, and Workplace Minister Craig Laundy says implementing this target would force many businesses to close.

Original article by Adam Creighton
The Australian – Page: 2 : 2-Feb-18

Australia’s official unemployment rate fell from 5.7 per cent to 5.5 per cent in 2017, but research by Roy Morgan shows that nearly 60 per cent of Australians think the jobless rate is much higher. The survey found that people in South Australia and Queensland in particular believe that their state’s real unemployment rate is significantly higher than official figures suggest. Roy Morgan estimates that the real unemployment rate is around 10 per cent, and executive director Gary Morgan says politicians, the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the general public know that the official figures are "nonsense".

The Australian Labor Party faces the potential loss of the seat of Batman in Victoria following the resignation of David Feeney over dual citizenship concerns. Some Labor insiders believe that the Greens will win the by-election. Meanwhile, there are growing tensions between Labor’s left and right factions ahead of the party’s national conference in July. Frontbencher Mark Butler wants another term as national president, but he may face a challenge from the Transport Workers Union’s Tony Sheldon, who has argued that the role should not be open to members of the frontbench.

The Federal Government has ordered an investigation into the circumstances that led to the loss of confidential documents – including many that are classified as "top secret". The major breach in security was revealed after the documents were found in two ex-government filing cabinets that were sold to a second-hand furniture store in Canberra. The documents were obtained by the ABC, and include files from the National Security Committee of Cabinet.
