Meanwhile, views towards finances compared to a year ago declined for the fifth week in a row, down 1.1%. Households’ view on the economic conditions over the next 12 months dipped a sharp 3.2%, while views towards economic conditions over the next 5 years fell 1.6%.

5.6 million will watch 2016 Melbourne Cup

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 1-Nov-16

Today’s Melbourne Cup will be one of the most-watched sporting events of the year, with 5.6 million Australians 14+ (29%) expected to tune in to watch the race on TV, new research from Roy Morgan shows – but the audience has flipped over the past decade from being mostly under 50 to mostly over 50. The Melbourne Cup’s audience has declined by almost a million Australians over the last decade from 6.5 million (39%) in 2006. However the horse race on the first Tuesday every November remains among the most-watched sporting events in the country: just behind the AFL Grand Final (6.4 million) and State of Origin matches (6.0 million) – and ahead of the NRL Grand Final (5.3 million).

Power bill shock as RET helps big firms

Australian Industry Group CEO Innes Willox warns that a sharp rise in the spot price of large-scale generation certificates could result in a 1-2 per cent increase in electricity bills for households and businesses. He attributes the rise in the spot price to concern that growth in renewable energy supply will not be sufficient to meet the Federal Government’s Renewable Energy Target. This requires the proportion of electricity generated by renewables to rise from 12.75 per cent at present to 23.5 per cent by 2020. Some states have more aggressive renewable energy targets.

Data from the Australian National University shows that the nation’s median overall wage was $A46,500 in 2014-15, or $A39,841 after tax. In contrast, Federal Government data shows that some 43,000 welfare recipients who are also paid family allowances received more than $A45,000 in tax-free government payments in 2014-15. Social Services Minister Christian Porter has stressed the need for policies aimed at ending welfare dependency and encouraging parents to enter the workforce.

Widening wage gap blamed on bias

The Australian – Page: 5 : 28-Oct-16

KPMG Australia has released a report which concludes that gender discrimination accounted for 38 per cent of the gap between the wages of men and women in 2014. This compares with 35 per cent in 2007. The report also notes that 30 per cent of the pay gap is due to the fact that more men tend to work in certain industries, in which the wages are typically higher than those for industries where women are over-represented. Workplace Gender Equality Agency director Libby Lyons stresses the need for action to address the gender pay gap.

Michele Levine, CEO, Roy Morgan Research: Australian opposition to Muslim immigration exaggerated

Original article by Michele Levine, Roy Morgan Research
Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 26-Oct-16

In stark contrast to the widely reported Essential Research Poll in mid-September that claimed Australians opposed Muslim Immigration 49% cf. 40%, independent research by Roy Morgan shows Australians continue to support Muslim immigration (58% cf. 33%) as well as Asylum Seeker Immigration (66% to 25%). Five weeks ago, Australians were bombarded with the news that we, as a nation, or the majority of us, did not want Muslims coming into the country – based on a poll by Essential Research. I said at the time, in several interviews (Listen to radio interview with 2SER), that we believed it was highly unlikely that these results were true. Roy Morgan surveys over several years from 2010 to 2015, showed majority support for Muslims, refugees and others immigrating to Australia. We believed it highly unlikely that sentiment would have changed so dramatically. The latest Roy Morgan Research showed indeed Australians continue to support Muslim Immigration, albeit with a reduced majority. It is crucial that public opinion surveys on such important issues as this are independent and conducted with a sample which is truly representative of the Australian population.

Australian Mines & Metals Association CEO Steve Knott has called for Employment Minister Michaelia Cash to implement an independent review of the Fair Work Commission. Knott has accused the FWC of being "highly dysfunctional" and politicised, and says several senior members of the FWC have told him that they intend to retire early for these reasons. Knott has also urged the Federal Government to pursue industrial relations reforms such as changes to unfair dismissal laws and restricting unions’ right to access workplaces.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says police and Workplace Health & Safety officials are investigating the cause of a fatal accident at a Gold Coast theme park. Two men and two women have died on the Thunder River Rapids Ride at Dreamworld after their raft hit another one and flipped over. Two of the victims were caught in a conveyor belt that carries the rafts. The ride is said to have experienced mechanical problems earlier in the day. It is the worst accident at an Australian theme park since 1979, when seven people died in a fire at Luna Park in Sydney.
