Liberal Party MP Andrew Hastie has retained the seat of Canning with a margin of 6.2 per cent, after a swing against him of 5.1 per cent in the federal election. Hastie is the latest Coalition MP to criticise the Liberal Party’s election campaign, noting that policies such as company tax cuts and the innovation agenda had little relevance for many Australians. Hastie also says Coalition backbenchers must be consulted regarding any negotiations with crossbenchers.

Legal woes mount for CFMEU

The liquidator of two failed building contractors has alleged that officials and employees of the militant Construction, Forestry, Mining & Energy Union threatened to commit unlawful acts. It has also been alleged that they attempted to induce subcontractors at a Melbourne construction site to break their contracts. The Federal Court recently fined the CFMEU some $A180,000 for its role in an illegal blockade of a construction site.

Hung parliament lifts risk of credit downgrade

Standard & Poor’s is tipped to review Australia’s "AAA" credit rating in the wake of the federal election. S&P has indicated that the nation’s credit rating may be downgraded unless the next government can implement measures to reduce the Budget deficit. Fitch Ratings has also warned of the potential for a downgrade if a hung parliament results in policies that further increase the deficit. However, Moody’s notes that Australia’s government debt remains much lower than the majority of developed economies.

Numbers don’t stack up for joint sitting on unions crackdown

Resources Minister Josh Frydenberg has conceded that the Federal Government would not have sufficient numbers to pass its industrial relations reforms in a joint sitting of parliament following the 2016 federal election. With the Coalition uncertain to be returned to office, it seems likely to have a combined maximum of 108 of the 226 seats in the upper and lower houses. Legislation to reinstate the Australian Building & Construction Commission was a trigger for the double-dissolution election.

Even if the Coalition is returned to office as a minority government, Malcolm Turnbull cannot be permitted to remain in the role of prime minister. He must either resign or be sacked by the Liberal Party, or the National Party must withdraw its support for the coalition if Turnbull remains at the helm. He has lost the healthy majority in parliament gained under predecessor Tony Abbott in 2013, while the Senate voting reforms have made the upper house even more dysfunctional and ensured that the Coalition cannot get its legislation passed.

Bookmakers say that betting trends suggest that the Australian Government will be re-elected on 2 July 2016. The Australian Labor Party’s chances of winning have lengthened to $A7, according to Centrebet’s odds, compared with $A1.10 for the Coalition. However, experience shows that the odds are not always a reliable guide. Labor won the 2015 election in Queensland despite punters backing the Coalition, while the odds suggested that Britons would vote to remain in the European Union.

There is concern within the Australian Labor Party that the dispute over union control of Victoria’s Country Fire Authority may cost it the federal election. Labor must win 21 seats nationwide in order to win the election, but it now seems unlikely to win the Victorian marginal seats of Dunkley and Corangamite due to the CFA dispute. Some federal Labor MPs have criticised the handling of the dispute by Premier Daniel Andrews, with federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten also expressing dissatisfaction with the state government’s actions.
