Tony Abbott supporters Kevin Andrews and Eric Abetz are expected to be among the casualties when Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announces his new frontbench team. It is expected that at least nine Coalition members who supported Turnbull in the leadership spill will be promoted in the ministerial reshuffle, and Turnbull has indicated that he is keen for more women to become government ministers. Several Abbott backers are tipped to retain their portfolios, including Andrew Robb.

Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 16-Sep-15

A multi-mode Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention has found that support for Australia’s ruling Liberal-National Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has fallen by two per cent to 43 per cent. The poll, which was carried out on the weekend of 12-13 September 2015, also shows that the Coalition’s primary vote has fallen by 1.5 per cent to 35 per cent, while the Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has fallen by four points to an equal record low of 86 points. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says the 7-Eleven and United Petroleum wages rort offers new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull the opportunity to grab the economic initiative, which means presenting to Parliament major changes to industrial relations and employment laws and cutting Government bureaucracy and wasteful Government spending.

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 6 : 16-Sep-15

New Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has committed to retaining the Coalition’s stance on key issues such as climate change and same-sex marriage. He will also support a proposal to add a so-called "effects test" to competition laws, although such a move is opposed by the Business Council of Australia. The business sector generally supports the dumping of former prime minister Tony Abbott in favour of Turnbull, while a snap Morgan Poll shows that 70 per cent of electors rate Turnbull as the preferred Prime Minister.

Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 15-Sep-15

A special snap SMS Morgan Poll conducted on 15 September 2015 has found that 70 per cent of Australian electors rate new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull as the "Better PM", while 24 per cent prefer Opposition Leader Bill Shorten. Analysis by gender shows that 72 per cent of men and 67 per cent of women rate Turnbull as the Better PM. He is also rated the Better PM by 86 per cent of Liberal-National Party supporters and 50 per cent of Australian Labor Party supporters. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says priorities for the Turnbull government must include the recent decline in Australia’s GDP growth, the high level of unemployment and under-employment, the cash economy, wages rorts and union/employer corruption.

Public opinion polls have consistently shown that Australians prefer Malcolm Turnbull rather than Tony Abbott as Prime Minister. An online poll by "The Daily Telegraph" on 14 September 2015 showed that 67 per cent of respondents preferred Turnbull. A Morgan Poll in July found that his rating as preferred prime minister had risen by six per cent in three months, to 44 per cent. Roy Morgan Research’s Gary Morgan noted at the time that Turnbull was also preferred by Coalition voters, who had tended to favour Abbott in the past.

Turnbull’s triumph

Original article by David Crowe

Malcolm Turnbull has become Australia’s 29th Prime Minister – and the fifth in just five years – after ousting incumbent Tony Abbott in a leadership spill. A number of Cabinet ministers and Coalition backbenchers declared their support for Abbott prior to the spill, but Turnbull won the leadership ballot 54-44. The Coalition’s poor track record in public opinion polls was a key factor in prompting Turnbull’s move against Abbott, as well as concerns that the Coalition faces election defeat under Abbott.

Liberals lead in Canning as threat to PM grows

There is growing speculation that Prime Minister Tony Abbott will face a leadership spill either before or just after the 19 September 2015 by-election in the seat of Canning. A Fairfax Media/Ipsos poll has found that Liberal Party would have narrowly won the by-election if it had been held on 12 September, albeit with a swing against it of about 10 per cent. Some Liberal insiders have suggested that a leadership challenge is likely if the swing against the party is greater than five per cent.

‘Fair’ GST rise to boost growth

A new report from Deloitte outlines several options for tax reform in Australia, estimating that overhauling the tax regime could boost national income by two per cent. The firm has proposed lifting the GST from 10 per cent to 15 per cent, but not increasing the scope of the tax to include items that are currently exempt. It is estimated that this would lift revenue by $A152bn over four years. Deloitte has also canvassed the option of raising the GST to 12.5 per cent and extending it to include fresh food. This option is forecast to raise $A112bn.

Australia’s unemployment rate fell to 6.2 per cent in August 2015, from 6.3 per cent in July. Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that employment rose by 17,400 jobs. Justin Fabo, a labour market expert at ANZ Bank, says the employment-to-population ratio rose in August, which suggests that the employment market is improving.
