The latest Fairfax/Ipsos poll suggests that voters would like the Australian Government to be bolder in its emissions policy. The poll shows that the Government’s new target of reducing greenhouse emissions by 26 per cent to 28 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030 is considered as too low. Only seven per cent of voters believe the government displays excessive zeal in its response to climate change, while 58 per cent of voters believe the government is not doing enough.

Abbott treads softly over media reform

Original article by Dominic White

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is seeking consensus in the industry before moving forward on media reform. Acknowledging technology is running ahead of regulation, he says it is too early to move on the audience reach rule as well as the two-out-of-three rule that restricts ownership of TV, radio and print. Without consensus, the government would simply be taking sides in a commercial dispute.

Getting lost in another gay distraction

Most of the Australian Government’s problems are of its own making, business leaders believe. Instead of concentrating on vital issues, such as trade agreements and infrastructure delivery, ministers are bogged down in debate over same-sex marriage. The row over Bronwyn Bishop’s expenses was yet another example of its capacity for self-harm.

Treasurer gets no mail on exemptions

Original article by Joanna Mather

The Australian Labor Party (ALP) says exempting private companies from publishing their tax affairs is a capitulation to the "big end of town" and has nothing to do with wealthy families fearing kidnapping. The ALP has used a Freedom of Information request to confirm no concerns were put by email or letter to senior ministers. Shadow treasurer Andrew Leigh says the government is proposing extra secrecy within the tax laws without a single person having written of any concerns.

Original article by Phillip Coorey

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is considering a referendum on gay marriage, an option also backed by Social Services Minister Scott Morrison. Despite backbench fears that a referendum would scupper the chances of reforming the Marriage Act, Abbott and his supporters are discussing taking the issue to the electorate, possibly in late 2016.
