Poles and wires sale no threat to budget: Baird

New South Wales Premier Mike Baird has downplayed concerns raised by UBS about the potential impact of the proposed electricity network privatisation on the state’s Budget. The "poles and wires" contribute about $A700m to government coffers each year, but Baird argues that the loss of this revenue will be offset by an economic benefit of $A300m over two decades arising from the state’s asset-recycling program. He also does not expect the unpopularity of the Federal Government to affect the state election

Iron ore budget hole gets bigger

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says his government will balance the Budget in about five years’ time. However, the continued fall in the price of iron ore since late 2014 is expected to reduce government revenue by $A1.8bn a year. The mid-year Budget update had forecast an average iron ore price of $US60 per tonne, but it has since traded at a low of $US56. Meanwhile, Education Minister Christopher Pyne will press ahead with university reforms, despite the bill being rejected by the Senate for a second time on 17 March 2015

Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 17-Mar-15

A special SMS Morgan Poll on State voting intention has found that support for the New South Wales Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has risen by three per cent to 55.5 per cent. The poll, which was carried out from 13-15 March 2015, also shows that support for the Australian Labor Party has fallen by three per cent to 44.5 per cent. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says that despite Mike Baird taking a controversial position in support of the sale of electricity assets, it appears that he has done enough over the past year to convince electors to elect him as Premier in his own right on 28 March

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull insists that Australians have the right to watch major sporting events on free-to-air TV. His declaration, made on 16 March 2015, was not well received by media magnate Rupert Murdoch, who wrote on Twitter that Turnbull was motivated by the desire to protect the interests of his "buddies" at Nine Entertainment Company. Turnbull’s most important recommendation is the abolition of the "reach rule", which prevents metropolitan TV broadcasters from merging with regional TV stations

Billionaire Gina Rinehart says high labour costs have a bigger impact on the profitability of Australian mining companies than low commodity prices. She stated on 11 March 2015 that the regulatory burden is too heavy and costly for companies. Roy Hill Holdings CEO Barry Fitzgerald revealed that the company had to seek more than 4,000 approvals for its iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia
