Claims by the Tax Justice Network that major Australian corporations are using strategies such as profit shifting to minimise their tax burden have sparked a Senate Economics Committee investigation. In a submission prepared by senior research fellow Sinclair Davidson of the right-wing Institute of Public Affairs, newspaper publisher Fairfax Media is accused of enjoying an effective tax rate of a mere 15.78% rather than the statutory 30% in 2013-14. Fairfax had in 2014 published articles on alleged tax avoidance by rival News Corp Australia

China’s State Council has ruled that the nation will use its $US3trn ($A3.9trn) worth of foreign currency reserves to make investments overseas. The targets will include major infrastructure projects, and Australia is set to be among the nations benefiting from the inflow of funds. The groundwork was laid by the Australian Government’s recent signing of a new free trade agreement with China. However some uncertainty remains on the issue of Chinese state-owned enterprises needing approval from Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board for large asset purchases

The final SMS Queensland State Morgan Poll conducted in mid-January 2015 showed the Liberal-National Party (50.5 per cent) with a slight two-party preferred advantage over the Australian Labor Party (49.5 per cent). This was the closest result of all major polls conducted for the state election. The Galaxy, Newspoll and ReachTEL polls conducted in the last week all predicted a clear LNP majority of 52 per cent per cent, compared with 48 per cent for the ALP. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says the SMS State Morgan Polls correctly predicted the close election results in Victoria in 2014 and Queensland in 2015

The Age – Page: 8 : 2-Feb-15

A new study on bulk billing under the Medicare system is being published in the "Medical Journal of Australia", by a team at the University of Technology, Sydney. The findings show that the use of bulk billing by general practitioners is not likely to trigger any increase in the number of very short consultations. The spectre of so-called six-minute medicine had been raised by the Federal Government in its push for a co-payment by patients or a rebate cut for visits that last no longer than 10 minutes
