Submissions have been lodged with the Australian Government’s new energy white paper taskforce. Rio Tinto argues that nuclear power should not automatically be ruled out as an option for the nation as it seeks to curb its greenhouse gas emissions. Fellow uranium producer BHP Billiton says in order for Australia to cash in on the growing demand for energy worldwide, local labour market laws must be relaxed to boost productivity. Others to make submissions are ANZ Banking, Peabody Energy and Qantas Airways

The Sydney Morning Herald – Page: 6 : 2-Dec-14

A bill put forward by Liberal Democratic Party Senator David Leyonhjelm revises the Marriage Act to recognise same-sex, transgender and intersex unions. Leyonhjelm says that if proper debate is not permitted on the bill, he may follow newly-independent Senator Jacqui Lambie and vote against Australian Government legislation. Prime Minister Tony Abbott appears to have backed away from his election pledge to permit a Liberal Party conscience vote on same-sex marriage, to which he is opposed

Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 1-Dec-14

A multi-mode Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention has found that support for the Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has risen by two per cent to 46.5 per cent. The poll, which was carried out on the weekends of 22-23 and 29-30 November 2014, also shows that support for the Australian Labor Party has fallen by two per cent to 53.5 per cent. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says the Federal Government must take action to implement its economic reforms if it wants to avoid being a one-term government like its Coalition counterpart in Victoria

Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 28-Nov-14

An SMS Morgan Poll on state voting intention one day before the 2014 Victorian election has found that support for the Coalition and the Australian Labor Party on a two-party preferred basis is level at 50 per cent each. Support for the Coalition has fallen by 1.6 per cent since the 2010 election, while support for Labor has risen by the same margin. The poll, which was carried out on 26-27 November, also shows that 50.5 per cent of electors now believe that Denis Napthine would make the better Premier. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says the closeness of the Morgan Poll means that minor parties’ preferences will play a pivotal role in deciding the outcome of the election

The future of the Australian Government’s proposed $A7 Medicare co-payment remains uncertain. The Australian Government’s decision to no longer pursue the $A7 co-payment for visits to general practitioners in the hostile Senate may also jeopardise the proposed Medical Research Future Fund. Its funding had been tied to the revenue to come from the abandoned measure, and the Department of Finance says it has no other source. Health Minister Peter Dutton previously said the fund would still be created, but with reduced resources. Supreme Court of Queensland judge David Jackson is hearing a claim by Chinese state enterprise Citic Pacific against its iron ore mining joint venture partner, federal politician Clive Palmer. Citic alleges that he improperly accessed an account and withdrew $A12.167m to fund his election campaign. Simon Couper QC, acting for Palmer, has formally conceded some of the points and argues the case should now be dropped. Andrew Bell SC, for Citic, says the admissions merely show that fraud did occur

New spending of similar magnitude has been pledged by both major parties on hospitals, in the final week of the campaign for the Victorian state election on 29 November 2014. However, there are also significant differences, with the Government favouring the Monash Children’s hospital and the Northern Hospital in Epping, while the Australian Labor Party has a focus on Orygen Youth Health in Parkville and a women’s and children’s hospital in Sunshine. Even the details for the proposed heart hospital in Clayton promised by both sides differ

Original article by Amy Corderoy
The Sydney Morning Herald – Page: 15 : 27-Nov-14

Dion Forstner, the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Radiologists’ faculty of radiation oncology dean, claims that under-resourcing by the Australian Government means many cancer sufferers cannot access potentially life-saving intensity-modulated radiation therapy. The body is lobbying the federal Medical Services Advisory Committee on the issue. Treatment rates in the UK have been lifted substantially after the Government set up a special funding vehicle with Stg23m
