Lawyers for a 28-year-man have launched an appeal against his murder conviction and the length of his sentence. The appeal will be based on the claim that Carlino experienced a version of "battered woman syndrome" after being subjected to bullying and threats of violence by his late employer

Both the Liberal and National parties are running candidates in the seat of Buninyong for the Victorian state election on 29 November 2014. While the Coalition partners normally allocate preferences to each other, the Nationals’ Sonia Smith has refused to back the Liberals’ Ben Taylor. The reason is the latter’s statement at an Australian Christian Lobby event that he would like to see a repeal of laws making abortions legal. Taylor notes however that the Government has no plans for such a reform

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission has secured a court-enforceable undertaking as well as compensation payments for affected customers from InvoCare. The listed company owns the White Lady, Guardian Funerals and Le Pine funeral services chains, and had been accused of forcing clients to buy memorial plaques directly from InvoCare rather than being allowed to supply their own. In fact a relevant clause had only been added to the contracts after 2011. InvoCare conceded that it likely contravened Australian Consumer Law, and a penalty of $A102,000 has been imposed

‘Flaw’ in corporate law could hit M&A

Japanese brewing group Asahi has revealed the size of its settlement deal with private equity firms Pacific Equity Partners and Unitas. It will receive $NZ220m ($A200), after claiming it had been misled over the acquisition for $A1.2bn in 2011 of the Independent Liquor business. Legal experts argue the case shows that large corporations are abusing section 18 of the Trade Practices Act, which is designed to protect small retail investors who lack the resources to carry out due diligence. The size of the compromise deal may have a dampening effect on mergers and acquisitions activity in Australia
