Australia’s Fair Work Commission (FWC) has upheld an Aussie Waste Management employee’s claim that his dismissal for swearing at the managing director was unlawful. The garbage truck driver was summarily dismissed after using offensive language during a private telephone conversation with the executive. FWC deputy president Nicole Wells noted that swearing in some workplace’s is quite common in 2015, adding that the phone call was private and not overhead by other staff

Businessman Nathan Tinkler recently stated that the Newcastle Jets soccer team’s debts will be repaid in full. However, the New South Wales Office of State Revenue has made an application to the Supreme Court to have Newcastle Jets Football Operations wound up due to an outstanding debt, which is believed to concern payroll taxes. The Jets have won only one match in the 2014-15 season

Lawyer Natalie Hickey suggests that Essendon coach James Hird has already racked up legal costs of at least $A1m in the long-running doping scandal. This includes Hird’s own legal expenses and the costs incurred by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency (ASADA). Meanwhile, ASADA’s lawyers must present their final arguments to the Australian Football League’s anti-doping tribunal by 5 February 2015

Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett has flagged a review of the state’s Corruption & Crime Commission (CCC), conceding that its performance has been below expectations. Barnett has indicated that his preference is for the CCC to focus on investigating organised crime rather than police corruption. Untreated trauma costs $9.1b a year: report

A new study by Pegasus Economics states that the annual loss to the Australian economy stemming from unresolved childhood trauma after sexual abuse is $A9.1bn. The four issues of alcohol abuse, mental illness, obesity, and suicide or attempted suicide were looked at in the research, commissioned by the Adults Surviving Child Abuse lobby group for its 2015 Budget submission to the Federal Government. Meanwhile the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse estimates the cost over a decade of a redress scheme for victims at $A4.3bn

Shadow attorney-general John Quigley has called for the State Government to hold a public inquiry into the CCC. A Senate inquiry into the new metadata retention bill on 29 January 2015 heard from Federal Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim. He argued that the authorities empowered to access the details of telephone calls and internet sessions would usually do so within six to 12 months, and it was therefore not necessary to force telcos and ISPs to store the records for two years. Vivienne Thom, the Inspector-General of Intelligence & Security, also voiced fears the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation may keep the metadata of people no longer deemed a threat
