Indonesia’s decision to suspend military co-operation with Australia seems to be related to teaching materials found by Indonesian soldiers on a base in Perth. Apparently, the soldiers objected to the Indonesian national philosophy Pancasila not being treated with due reverence. Indonesians also believe that Australians are inclined to support an irredentist movement in West Papua. Australian Defence Minister Marise Payne is keen to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

ASC, BAE Systems and Forgacs have begun shedding workers at their Australian shipyards in response to a lull in defence projects. The Federal Government has proposed a new strategy for the shipbuilding industry whereby new naval vessels will be continuously built over the next two decades, replacing older vessels as they are retired from service. Japan has a similar program for its submarine fleet

Queries over telcos holding data two years

The Age – Page: 10 : 30-Jan-15

A Senate inquiry into the new metadata retention bill on 29 January 2015 heard from Federal Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim. He argued that the authorities empowered to access the details of telephone calls and internet sessions would usually do so within six to 12 months, and it was therefore not necessary to force telcos and ISPs to store the records for two years. Vivienne Thom, the Inspector-General of Intelligence & Security, also voiced fears the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation may keep the metadata of people no longer deemed a threat

Original article by Jared Owens
The Australian – Page: 2 : 13-Jan-15

Australian Attorney-General George Brandis claims it is "urgent" for telcos to be required to keep customers’ telephone and internet records for a minimum of two years. Critics of the Government’s data retention proposals say the Sydney siege and Paris terrorism attacks show that the reforms cannot safeguard people against extremists. Senator Scott Ludlam of the Australian Greens points out that the authorities were familiar with the perpetrators in both Sydney and Paris

Prime Minster Tony Abbott said on 8 January 2015 that there will be no loss of jobs in Adelaide. The Japanese Government proposed to build the new vessels with the Soryu-class submarine as the basis for the $A20 billion project, and some work to be done in Australia

Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 22-Sep-14

A multi-mode Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention has found that support for the Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has fallen by 0.5 per cent to 45.5 per cent. The poll, which was carried out on the weekends of 13-14 and 20-21 September 2014, also shows that support for the Australian Labor Party has risen by 0.5 per cent to 54.5 per cent. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says the small boost in support for Labor comes despite a recent special snap SMS Morgan Poll showing that 54 per cent of Australians approve of Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s decision to send 600 troops to Iraq

Japanese subs on the way

Original article by Phillip Coorey, John Kerin, Simon Evans
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 4 : 9-Sep-14

The Australian Government is believed to have decided to purchase a new fleet of submarines from Japan, in a major blow for the local shipbuilding industry. South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill has warned that the state’s federal MPs will face an electoral backlash if the submarines are built overseas rather than by Adelaide-based shipbuilder ASC. The Federal Government’s 2013 election platform included a commitment to build the submarines in Adelaide
