The Australian employment market is changing. In the three months to August 2014, for the first time there were more people employed in education and training than manufacturing. In Western Australia (WA), education surpassed manufacturing nearly three years before. In WA, there were fewer than 96,000 people directly employed in mining, the lowest number since mid-2011. There were 152,000 retail workers, 150,000 healthcare workers and over 34,000 in the real estate sector

Melbourne lawyer Michael Magazanik says the recent compensation payout to a former Werribee Secondary College teacher has prompted other past teachers at the school to approach him. Peter Doulis was awarded more than $A1m after being subjected to protracted bullying and abuse by his students. Employment law expert Tim Donaghey says the judgment may allow other employees in stressful jobs to take similar action, particularly if workplace bullying is involved

Think Education Group has issued the results of new polling commissioned from Pureprofile. They show that among 18-to-35-year-olds fewer than two thirds believe that the education they received has given them the skills they need in their jobs. Among vocational training graduates the ratio is even lower, at just 57%. Think CEO Linda Brown says more needs to be done to eliminate the gap between the education system and the "real world". Another finding is that men tend to choose their field of study based on the salary they want to earn, while women "follow their passion"

Schools turn to software to help catch plagiarists

Original article by Benjamin Preiss
The Age – Page: 3 : 3-Sep-14

MacRobertson Girls’ High School is among more than 21 schools in Victoria that now deploy the Turnitin software to detect plagiarism by pupils. The makers of the program claim that it trawls through over 35 billion web pages to find any improper matches with the work handed in by students. Local distributor Aldis Associates says private schools are its main client base. MacRobertson principal Toni Meath argues that use of Turnitin allows the school to educate students on the need for original work, especially as they prepare for university

The New South Wales Government’s parliamentary inquiry into home schooling will commence public hearings in September 2014. Some 3,238 students were registered for home schooling in the state in December 2013, but groups that are involved in home schooling believe that the unofficial figure is much higher. The Department of Education’s submission to the inquiry notes the lack of procedures to gauge the true extent of unregistered home education

Brightest students dismiss teaching

Original article by Justine Ferrari
The Australian – Page: 1 and 2 : 23-Jun-14

New Australian Institute of Teaching & School Leadership data indicate that the number of high school graduates with the best marks choosing to become teachers is in decline. In 2005 they accounted for 40%-plus of the total enrolments in teaching courses at university, but by 2012 this had fallen to below 30%. The Australian Education Union has repeatedly called for the number of places offered to be reduced, as there is an over-supply of teachers and quality is suffering. The growth rate per annum for teaching enrolments was 8% in 2012, compared with 4% on average for all fields
