Shares in Healthscope will be priced within the range of $A1.76 and $A2.29 apiece in an IPO that will be worth around $A2.5bn. The company is being floated by TPG Capital and The Carlyle Group, but Anton Tagliaferro of Investors Mutual says investors should be cautious about IPOs that are backed by private equity firms. He believes that Healthscope’s shares are overvalued and says Investors Mutual will not be buying stock in the float

Breast cancer patients receiving radiation treatment have an elevated risk of developing heart problems, of up to 2%, if the tumour is on the left. However, Epworth Hospital in Melbourne has had good results with teaching the women breathing techniques, so that they can stay still while the radiation doses are administered. Oncologist Andrew See says a clinical trial with a control group will be conducted to show whether the approach is worth pursuing

Pay plea to public patients

Original article by Gareth Parker
The West Australian – Page: 3 : 4-Jul-14

Health care spending will account for 28% of the Western Australian (WA) Government’s 2014-15 Budget, compared with 25% in 2009-10. The average cost of treatment in the state’s public hospitals is also 8% above the national figure, and WA Health Minister Kim Hames has foreshadowed two major initiatives to address the issue. Those holding private health insurance cover will be asked by staff to use it rather than rely on public funding. As well, there will be increased reliance on in-home care services, as some 30% of those in hospital do not actually need a bed. The measures are backed by the Australian Medical Association

Volunteers drawn from the public are used at the special care nursery of Sunshine Hospital in Melbourne to help settle infants suffering withdrawal symptoms. Their mothers have used opiates or methadone during pregnancy, and the babies are very sensitive to stimulation. They can cause severe disruption to the ward. The program using the volunteers to do four-hour shifts was established in about 2004 by associate nurse unit manager Anne Robson. Neonatologist Thao Lu says the facility offers "multidisciplinary, non-judgmental care"

Labor vow to act on hospital violence

Original article by Kate Hagan

Victorian Auditor-General John Doyle in 2013 noted that public hospitals were failing to document all cases of violence against their staff. Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews has now vowed to address the issue if elected to govern in November 2014. He made the pledge at the 26 June state delegates’ conference of the Australian Nursing Federation. Health Minister David Davis also spoke, and highlighted new laws that include mandatory minimum sentences for those attacking emergency services workers. The Australian Medical Association applauds the Australian Labor Party’s push for greater transparency on the problem
