The State of Victoria has declined to reveal how much it paid to host the "Les Miserables: From Page To Stage" exhibition in 2014. State Library Board president John Wiley concedes that the number of visitors was below expectations. It was the first time the library had charged an entry fee for an exhibition. It attracted some 25,000 visitors, although more than 83,000 people viewed the library’s previous exhibition in 2013

Australian holiday-goers get their culture fix

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 18 per cent of Australians aged 14+ visited at least one art gallery or museum on their last holiday. The survey, which was carried out in the two years to October 2014, also shows that 36 per cent of Australians who went overseas for their last holiday visited at least one art galley or museum. Some 75 per cent who travelled to Europe for their last holiday visited an art gallery or museum. Meanwhile, 14 per cent of Australians whose last holiday was domestic visited at least one museum or art gallery

Worldwide search for $450m art gallery expansion project

Michael Brand, director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, has announced the shortlist of 12 architectural firms asked to submit entries for the Sydney Modern tender. The expansion of the museum will cost $A450m, and initially 30 firms had been selected as candidates. In early 2015, five will be named from the current dozen that contains Herzog & de Meuron, David Chipperfield Architects, SANAA Tokyo, Kerry Hill Architects, RMA Architects, Candalepas Associates, Renzo Piano, Sean Godsell Architects and Fender Katsalidis

A way to spend a night in jail, without breaking the law

The National Trust will turn some of its properties into hotels. A trial at the Old Melbourne Goal will be conducted between December 2014 and February 2015. Up to 30 people will be allowed to spend a night in the historic prison, paying up to $A250 per night. There are plans to expand the accommodation scheme to other properties of the National Trust, including the ship "Polly Woodside", and mansions "Como", "Barwon Park" and "Labassa"
