Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and entertainment industry personalities have paid tribute to New Zealand-born comedian and satirist John Clarke, who has died at the age of 68. While Clarke is best known for his mock political interviews with Bryan Dawe on the Nine Network and subsequently on the ABC, he has been a major contributor to the local film and TV industry over many years. He also recently began writing a regular column for "Meanjin".

Vale Leonard French, artist who let the glass shine

National Gallery of Victoria director Tony Ellwood has praised award-winning Australian artist Leonard French, who has died at the age of 88. French began his career in the signwriting industry before becoming widely known for his paintings, mosaics and murals. However, his most famous work is the stained glass ceiling in the NGV’s Great Hall, which comprises about 10,000 individual pieces of coloured glass.

The Victorian Government will contribute $A10m in funding for the Australian Music Vault. The exhibition and education facility will include an Australian Music Hall of Fame, and it will be based at the Victorian Arts Centre. Music industry veteran Michael Gudinski has welcomed the announcement of the Hall of Fame and the fact that it will be located in Melbourne.

British Prime Minister David Cameron is among the many people who have paid tribute to David Bowie, who has died from cancer at the age of 69. Bowie’s most popular albums included "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars", which was released in 1972. His final album, "Blackstar", was released on 8 January 2016. Bowie also starred in films such as "The Man Who Fell to Earth". His last performance in Australia was in 2004, but an exhibition of Bowie memorabilia in Melbourne attracted more than 200,000 visitors in 2014.

The credits roll for arts and recreation productivity score

New data from the Productivity Commission shows that Australia’s arts and recreation industry achieved an 8.2 per cent increase in labour productivity in 2013-14. In contrast, there was a modest fall in productivity in the mining, construction and manufacturing industries. Meanwhile, the output of arts and recreation companies increased by 2.6 per cent, despite a 5.6 per cent decline in labour.

Seven storeys of shells start $40m art project

The Barangaroo precinct in Sydney will feature some $A40m worth of public art, which will be funded by the private sector. The New South Wales Government officially launched the Barangaroo Arts and Cultural Plan on 16 July 2015. Property developer Lend Lease will fund seven of the nine art and culture projects that will be completed by 2020.

Sotheby’s will hold an Important Australian Art auction in August 2015. Paintings that will go under the hammer include Jeffrey Smart’s "Morning Practice, Baia", which is expected to fetch between $A550,000 and $A750,000. The painting has been owned by one family since 1970, and Sotheby’s Australia chairman Geoffrey Smith says it has generated much interest among the firm’s clients.

The late Alan Boxer has bequeathed a collection of paintings by Australian modernists to the National Gallery of Australia.
