A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 5.3 per cent of Australians aged 18+ placed bets on horse races at least once in any given four-week period in the year to September 2014. This compares with 8.3 per cent in the year to September 2004. However, betting activity increases significantly around Melbourne Cup time, although the proportion of Australians who watch the race on TV has fallen from 39 per cent to 31.1 per cent in the last 10 years

Admire Rakti is the favourite to win the 2014 Melbourne Cup, although the last horse to win the race carrying 58.5 kilograms was in 1972. Five-year-old gelding "Signoff" has emerged as a contender for the Cup after winning the Lexus Stakes. The horse is partly owned by Australian businessman Gerry Ryan. Lloyd Williams-owned "Fawkner" is also highly regarded to win the Melbourne Cup

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 22 per cent of Australian women aged 14+ jogged regularly or occasionally in the year to June 2014. This compares with just 15 per cent in the year to June 2010. The number of women who participate in yoga has risen from 9.4 per cent to 14.4 per cent over this period, while participation in cycling has risen from 11 per cent to 16 per cent

Rona Macniven of the University of Sydney released a new survey at the Sports Medicine Australia congress on 15 October 2014. It shows that sporting bodies derive a substantial share of their sponsorship revenue from deals with companies that sell products deemed unhealthy. Fast food, alcohol and gambling account for 27% of the sponsorships in cricket, with rugby league, rugby union, Australian rules and soccer ranked next. Fast food chain McDonald’s has launched a new Western Sydney Wanderers meal, to be sold in 88 outlets across the soccer club’s catchment area in western Sydney

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 33 per cent of Australians aged 14+ who regularly participate in team sports bought lollies in an average four-week period during the year to June 2014. The research also shows that 44 per cent of volleyball players buy lollies, followed by field hockey, rugby league and cricket players (39 per cent)

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 56 per cent of the Bulldogs’ 355,000 fans are men. In contrast, men account for 59 per cent of the 462,000 supporters of the rival 2014 National Rugby League Grand Final team, the South Sydney Rabbitohs. The survey, which was carried out in the year to August 2014, also shows that Bulldogs supporters are more likely to be a financial member of their team, while Rabbitohs supporters are more likely to play rugby league themselves

Essendon opts to drop legal action, move on

Essendon Football Club has decided not to appeal the verdict of the Federal Court that supported the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency. The club has received legal advice that it would win an appeal. However, the Australian Football League does not want it to appeal and the players want the matter to be settled. AFL gains for Seven, as NRL loses audience

Despite Seven West Media agreeing to let pay TV provider Fox Sports simulcast almost all Australian Football League (AFL) matches, the free-to-air network is set to record a gain in audience ratings for the 2014 season. The AFL grand final played on 27 September appears likely to be the most-watched program for the year, with an average capital city viewers figure of 2.813 million.
