Importance of using Roy Morgan’s Cross-Platform Audience measurement proven by Bauer and News Corp’s decisions to pull out of AMAA

Original article by
B&T – Page: online : 19-Dec-16

In the past week both Bauer Media and now News Corp’s magazines division have made the decision to withdraw from the Audited Media Association of Australia (AMAA) magazine circulation measurement system (as reported in B&T’s article "Is This The End For The AMAA as News Corp Follows Bauer And Pulls The Audit Pin?"). Both magazine publishers have argued that the AMAA doesn’t properly capture the new reality by measuring digital readership of titles properly. The Roy Morgan Cross-Platform Audience figures which measure across print, website and app are the most accurate way to properly measure the breadth of readership of a title – whether a magazine or a newspaper. Advertisers are increasingly relying on the average issue readership figures provided by the Roy Morgan Cross-Platform Audience metric to buy their print advertising to target the correct audience.

Cricket Australia has declined to comment on claims that it will push for Test and limited-overs matches against less popular nations to be removed from the anti-siphoning list. Cricket Australia has previously signalled its view that some one-day international matches should be removed from the list, which requires all international cricket matches that are played in Australia to be broadcast on free-to-air TV. In contrast, pay-TV group Foxtel has exclusive rights to some AFL and NRL matches.

Sky’s the limit as Murdoch tries again

Original article by John Kehoe
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 15 : 12-Dec-16

Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox has approached UK pay-TV group Sky with a cash offer of Stg10.75 per share. Fox currently has a 39 per cent stake in Sky, and the proposed Stg11.2bn ($A19bn) bid values the target at $A31bn. Fox previously launched a takeover bid in 2011 but was forced to abandon it in the wake of the telephone hacking scandal in the UK. Any deal is likely to attract regulatory scrutiny given that Murdoch’s News Corporation owns several major British newspapers.

Robb joins fight over free-to-air licence fees

Original article by Jake Mitchell
The Australian – Page: 23 : 9-Dec-16

The Ten Network’s remuneration report was rejected by 17.06 per cent of votes cast at the 2016 AGM. Ten is lobbying the Federal Government for a further reduction in TV broadcasting licence fees, but chairman David Gordon concedes that these efforts have had limited effect to date. Ten director Andrew Robb, who stepped down as trade minister earlier in 2016, says both major political parties recognise that local networks pay higher licence fees than their overseas peers. He adds that the government’s fiscal problems may be delaying reform.
