Data from ZenithOptimedia shows that advertising expenditure across all media is expected to reach a record $A13.4bn in Australia during calendar 2016. Meanwhile, a survey of the CEOs of 23 media companies has identified key issues for the industry in 2016. They include cross-media ownership reform, government measures to stimulate economic growth following the end of the resources boom, and the need for Australia to become more innovative.

Greste warns against media curbs

Australian journalist Peter Greste was presented with the Human Rights Medal by Human Rights Commission president Gillian Triggs on 10 December 2015. UK executive tipped to lead ABC

The former controller of BBC One, Jay Hunt, has downplayed reports that she is a leading candidate to succeed Mark Scott as MD of the ABC. Hunt has been the chief creative officer at the UK’s Channel 4 since 2010, and says she has no immediate plans to leave the public broadcaster. ABC chairman Jim Spigelman is believed to favour Kim Williams as the new MD, although some ABC directors have reservations about appointing Williams to the role.

Shares in Dick Smith Holdings (DSH) closed at $A0.36 on 7 December 2015, after reaching a low of $A0.20 in the previous week. The household electronics retailer’s stock was issued at $A2.20 in a $A520m IPO in 2013. Businessman Dick Smith says investors should not be surprised by the slump, noting that Woolworths has sold DSH for just $A94m only one year before the float. However, Smith is confident that the fortunes of the company he founded in 1968 can be revived.

Fairfax invests in neighbourhood company

Australian-listed Fairfax Media has paid an undisclosed price for a 25 per cent stake in Nabo, a neighbourhood-based social media network that was founded in November 2014. Seven West Media and venture capital group Reinventure were both among the initial investors in Nabo, and each have a 25 per cent stake in the venture. Fairfax has previously invested in a similar New Zealand social media network called Neighbourly.

7-Eleven affair a signal to franchisors

A revised franchise agreement that has been proposed by 7-Eleven Australia indemnifies head office for any future liability for underpaid staff. However, the convenience store chain has agreed to pay the first $A25m of any claims for unpaid wages that are received by the independent wage review panel that was set up in response to the wage exploitation scandal. Franchisees will be required to pay the next $A5m worth of claims, but head office will equally share any liability for claims beyond this sum. This has significant implications for other franchisees, amid claims that the wage scandal is not limited to 7-Eleven.

Ad market set for election bounce in 2016, say sales bosses

Australia’s commercial TV networks are upbeat about the outlook for the advertising market in 2016. Seven West Media’s chief revenue officer Kurt Burnette notes that there was 11 per cent growth in the ad market in 2004, which is the last time the Olympics and a federal election were held in the same year. Optimism about the ad market in 2016 will also be bolstered by the national census in August.

Communications Minister Mitch ­Fifield says technology has made Australia’s existing cross-media ownership laws redundant. He has also given indications that any reforms will include measures to ensure that local TV news services are retained in regional areas if merger rules are relaxed. The Coalition’s partyroom discussed abolition of the "reach rule" and the "two-out-of-three" rule on 2 December 2015, and the issue is also likely to be on the agenda at the final meeting of cabinet ministers for the year.

The editor of Sydney’s "The Daily Telegraph", Paul Whittaker, will succeed Chris Mitchell as editor-in-chief of "The Australian". Mitchell has been in the role since 2002, after a previous three-year stint as editor of the national broadsheet. News Corporation’s co-chairman Rupert Murdoch, as well as News Corp Australia executive chairman Michael Miller and CEO Peter Tonagh, have praised Mitchell’s contribution to the media group’s flagship Australian newspaper.

SBS staffer convicted over drunken post

SBS employee Nicholas Hogan has been given a two-year good behaviour bond after being convicted of making threats to kill police officers. The Newton Local Court in Sydney found the editing assistant guilty on a charge of using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend. Hogan had posted a message on Facebook stating that he intended to kill a police officer in the name of Allah. The post was made one day after the funeral of police accountant Curtis Cheng, who was murdered by a Islamic extremist.
