OzTAM’s TV ratings methodology is being updated to embrace time-shifting and multiscreens. The new data will begin to be available later in 2015, and OzTAM will report ratings for programs that are viewed up to 28 days after initial transmission. OzTAM CEO Doug Peiffer says preliminary data suggests that taking time-shifting into account can lift a program’s overall ratings by up to 10 per cent. He adds that multiscreen data is unlikely to have much impact on ratings, as most people still watch traditional TV.

Foxtel Richard Freudenstein says "sensible" changes to anti-siphoning rules for sports rights should be part of any reforms to cross-media ownership laws. He argues that while major sporting events should continue to be protected, the anti-siphoning rules should be relaxed. However, Seven West Media CEO Tim Worner and Free TV Australia chairman Harold Mitchell are among those who say the existing regime for sports broadcasts should be retained.

The Masters Home Improvement joint venture between Woolworths and US-based Lowe’s has made a total loss of $A604m over the last four years. Although Woolworths still expects Masters to become profitable at some stage, DGC Advisory’s Geoff Dart believes that Masters needs to reposition its business to focus on home finishing products such as paint and carpets. The Nine Network will ramp up investment in Australian comedy, drama and entertainment after ending a content deal with US-based Warner Brothers. Seven Network will gain the repeat rights to Nine mainstay "The Big Bang Theory", but Nine’s programming director Andrew Blackwell argues that Seven needs the popular sitcom in order to attract a lower age demographic. Seven counterpart Angus Ross has responded by noting that the deal will boost Seven’s demographics at the expense of its rival.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission is expected to make a decision on the proposed equity alliance between the Ten Network and Foxtel in the week beginning 7 September 2015. If the deal is approved, Foxtel will pay $A77m for a 15 per cent stake in the free-to-air broadcaster, while Ten will acquire a 24.99 per cent stake in Foxtel’s MCN sales division. Eadie notes that so-called "millennials" in particular have favoured user-generated content on platforms such as YouTube in recent years. However, he expects that in coming years they will embrace broadcast-quality content delivered via a range of devices and platforms.
