Nine to bid for AFL rights after $925m NRL deal

Fresh from agreeing to pay $A925 million for the National Rugby League television rights for five years from 2018, Channel Nine will try to wrest some Australian rules football matches from the Seven Network. Though Seven and Foxtel are the current rights holders, Nine is expected to bid for at least two Australian Football League matches a week as it seeks to boost its sports content.

Matildas, netball spark surge in women’s sport

The popularity of women’s sports is rising although this trend is not reflected in TV broadcasting of sports. According to the Australian Sports Commission, reports on women’s sports constitute only 8.7 per cent of TV sports news coverage. Excellent performance of Australian women at the Netball World Cup and at the quarter-finals of the soccer World Cup will no doubt attract more TV viewers.

Seven seeks gold at Rio Olympics

Seven West Media will use its broadcast rights to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games to attract advertisers to various types of delivery. Seven chief revenue officer Kurt Burnette says advertisers will be able to choose from Seven, 7Mate, 7Two, a streamed news channel, a video on-demand service and subscription video on-demand. Consumers will pay for access to live streaming.

Internet usage draws level with TV viewing

The 2015 Deloitte Media Consumer Survey shows that the internet has become as popular as TV as a source of entertainment. Television viewing was named by 60 per cent of respondents as being among their three "preferred sources of entertainment". The usage of the internet for "social or personal interests" was reported as being in the same category also by 60 per cent of respondents.

The Sharp threat to Foxtel

Australians have responded enthusiastically to the offer of US streaming service Netflix. The service was launched locally six months ago. Citi estimates that Netflix has now 1.6 million subscribers in Australia. Pay TV operator Foxtel and free-to-air TV channels have a formidable competitor. Investors will no doubt watch with interest the contest between traditional TV broadcasters and streaming services.

Roy Morgan Newspaper Readership and Cross-Platform Audience Results for June 2015

Roy Morgan Research has released its Print Readership and seven-day Cross-Platform Audience results for Australian newspapers for the year to June 2015. Readership of Print Monday to Friday editions have declined by 11.3 per cent overall in the total number of readers for the country’s major metropolitan papers. Meanwhile, there was an overall readership decline of 8.8 per cent for Saturday editions, while readership of Sunday newspapers fell by 7.1 per cent. "The Sunday Times" recorded the largest cross-platform audience growth overall, up 5.5 per cent to 901,000.

Roy Morgan Research’s Australian Magazine Readership Survey shows that 12,378,000 Australians aged 14+ read the latest issue of at least one magazine on average in the year to June 2015. "Coles Magazine" was the most widely read print magazine during the period, with an average readership of 2,721,000. Meanwhile, a number of titles recorded an increase in total cross-platform audiences, including "Cosmopolitan" (up three per cent to 513,000), "Men’s Health" (up 1.6 per cent to 587,000) and "New Idea" (up 1.3 per cent to 1,340,000).

James Murdoch told to save pay TV

Streaming video-on-demand provider Netflix poses a serious competitive threat to pay-TV. Sanford C Bernstein analyst Todd Juenger writes in a note to institutional investors that viewers will abandon pay-TV if a new business model is not found. The note is titled "Open Letter to Mr Murdoch" because Juenger believes that 21st Century Fox CEO James Murdoch is the right person to tackle the problem.

Harvey Norman predicted to be solid

UBS has a "buy" recommendation on a number of retail stocks that benefit from a strong housing market. The firm is particularly upbeat about the outlook for Harvey Norman in the August 2015 reporting season, although it also likes JB Hi-Fi, Breville Group and Adairs. However, UBS is bearish about grocery retailers. Credit Suisse also favours Harvey Norman, while JB Hi-Fi is the top pick for Macquarie Group.

Court simmers with cooking show face-off

The Seven Network is seeking an injunction to prevent the Nine Network from broadcasting "The Hotplate" until a copyright dispute is heard in court. Lawyers for Nine and the show’s producer, Endemol, say the case may not be resolved until 2016, which would effectively force Nine to abandon the cooking show.
