Qatar Airway has agreed to a request from the federal government to operate two repatriation flights to bring home Australians who are stranded in Lebanon. The proposed flights would go from Cyprus to Sydney via Doha, with Qatar Airways CEO Badr Mohammed Al Meer saying it is committed to providing support to Australian passengers and ensuring their safe return home. Qantas is also operating two repatriation flights from Cyprus at the request of the federal government, with the request from the federal government for Qatar Airways for assistance coming as it assesses a possible investment in Virgin Australia by Qatar Airways.

Consumer advocate group Choice has used a submission to the federal government’s aviation green paper to call for increased protection for airline passengers, including compensation for delayed or cancelled flights. Choice has also released the findings of its research on the performance of Australia’s airlines. It found that 40 per cent of respondents had a flight cancelled or delayed in the year to October 2023; 63 per cent stated that they will given no reason for the flight’s failure to depart on schedule. Meanwhile, 20 per cent had to wait at least six months for a refund, and just 47 per cent received a refund within a month.

Australian Qatar Business Council chairman Simon Harrison has appeared before a Senate hearing into the federal government’s decision to reject Qatar Airways’ request for more flights to Australia. He said the decision has caused "sensitivities" in the local Qatar business community. He added that Qatar regards it as a "national insult" that the decision has been linked to an incident in which Australian women were strip-searched at Doha airport in 2020. Qantas chairman Richard Goyder and CEO Vanessa Hudson will appear before the committee on Wednesday; former CEO Alan Joyce may be summonsed to appear when he returns from overseas.

The federal government continues to attract scrutiny over its decision to reject Qatar Airways’ request for additional flights to Australia. Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Trade Minister Don Farrell have confirmed that their departments were not asked for advice from Transport Minister Catherine King regarding the request from Qatar Airways. King has stated that she had consulted "relevant ministers" before making the decision on 10 July. Shadow transport minister Bridget McKenzie has questioned why the Treasurer was not deemed to be a relevant minister. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong have also stated that they were not consulted until after the decision had been made.

Borghetti urges easing of airport caps

There is currently an upper limit of 80 take-offs and landings per hour at Sydney Airport, which the Federal Government has said it will not amend. However John Borghetti, CEO of carrier Virgin Australia, says the accompanying cap of 20 movements for each quarter of an hour means that even the figure of 80 is rarely reached. He argues that during normal working hours the total could be boosted to 90 without any adverse impact on residents, and a recent study for the New South Wales and Federal Governments also advocated a lift to 85

Qantas under attack in air wars dogfight

Original article by Jamie Freed

The Australian Government insists on reciprocity in traffic rights for airlines of Australia and Hong Kong. Cathay Pacific argues that Qantas Airways’ Jetstar Hong Kong will not comply with Hong Kong’s Basic Law, because the new budget carrier business of the Australian airline will be effectively controlled from Australia. Mike Mrdak, the secretary of the Australian Department of Infrastructure & Regional Development, commented on the matter in mid-August 2014. He said Cathay Pacific and other Hong Kong carriers will not be given increased traffic rights into Australia unless Australian carriers are given the same rights in Hong Kong

CASA crackdown threatens to ground colour blind pilots

The Sydney Morning Herald – Page: 16 : 18-Jun-14

Australian senator David Fawcett of the Liberal Party wants Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss to intervene after a move by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. It has contacted some 500 licensed pilots whose medical certificates indicate they failed colour perception tests. The watchdog is warning them of a possible tightening of regulations, and among those affected are 124 commercial pilots at carriers such as Virgin Australia. The Administrative Appeals Tribunal had ruled over two decades ago that colour blind pilots can still operate as co-pilots on passenger flights
