AirAsia X is expanding its Australian operations. The airline’s founder Tony Fernandes said on 12 March 2015 that the carrier’s Australian business will be in a better financial position within six months. The airline lost $A128 million before tax in 2014. Fernandes said more flight frequencies will be added to Australia in 2015

Cathay Pacific adds more Sydney-Hong Kong seats

Cathay Pacific mainly uses the Airbus A330 to service the Sydney-to-Hong Kong route, but it will increase capacity by switching to larger Boeing aircraft for two of the daily flights from October 2015. The Hong Kong-based carrier cannot add additional flights on Australian routes at present. Cathay’s Nelson Chin notes that the recent fall in the value of the Australian dollar has had little impact on the travel intentions of Australian consumers

Qantas brings new dimension to flight

Qantas will team up with Samsung to provide passengers on some flights with a virtual reality experience. First-class passengers on selected A380 flights on the Pacific route will be able to view videos using virtual reality headsets and Samsung Galaxy smartphones. Qantas marketing executive Olivia Wirth says the airline will gauge feedback to decide whether to extend the new service to other passengers

Virgin gears up for international push

Virgin Australia Holdings will acquire full ownership of Tigerair, and Virgin CEO John Borghetti has not ruled out international flights for the budget offshoot. Tigerair currently operates a fleet of Airbus A320s, which Borghetti says could be used on shorter international routes. He also says other aircraft models could be added to Tigerair’s fleet, but says divesting the A320s is not on the agenda

Seat sales to Europe lure travellers

A number of international airlines are offering low-cost airfares for Australians who want to travel to Europe in 2015. Many carriers have maintained their "early bird" fares at the same or a similar level as those for 2013, although most flights must be booked during the last three months of 2014.
