Qantas has advised that it will terminate a long-standing alliance with China Eastern Airlines, although it will honour all existing bookings. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission had signalled in September that it would oppose an application to extend the partnership. Qantas recently abandoned a $614m takeover bid for Alliance Aviation after the deal was opposed by the ACCC, while the competition watchdog is also pursuing legal action over allegations that Qantas had sold tickets for flights that it had already cancelled.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) opposes an alliance between Qantas and China Eastern Airline on competition grounds. However, Chinese ambassador Ma Zhaoxu has asked ACCC chairman Rod Sims to take into account the relationship between the two nations when deciding whether to block the alliance. He argues that the deal will have no impact on competition. The ACCC is concerned that the two carriers would dominate the Sydney-Shanghai route.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) opposes an alliance between Qantas and China Eastern Airlines. However, the Department of Infrastructure & Regional Development’s submission on the regulator’s draft decision argues that the alliance will benefit travellers and the Australian economy. It takes the view that the ACCC has focused too much on the alliance’s impact on competition on the Sydney-Shanghai route

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) is concerned about a proposed alliance between Qantas and China Eastern Airlines. The ACCC has opposed the alliance in its draft ruling, arguing that the two carriers would dominate the Sydney-Shanghai route. ACCC chairman Rod Sims says he would be more willing to support an alliance between Qantas and carriers such as China Southern or Air China, as Qantas does not currently have flights to their main hubs

China Eastern Airlines wants to strengthen its relationship with Qantas. The Chinese airline’s GM for Oceania, Kathy Zhang, said deeper co-operation is necessary when business conditions are tough. Qantas lost almost $A500 million in 2013-14 and its management sees alliances as instrumental in increasing revenue from its international operations
