Sydney air passengers hit record

New figures show that Sydney Airport’s passenger throughput rose by three per cent in 2015, to a record 39.656 million. The number of domestic passengers rose by 2.3 per cent to 25.9 million, while international passenger numbers grew by 4.3 per cent to 13.7 million. The airport benefited from an increase in airlines’ capacity. Meanwhile, a total of 33.1 million passengers passed through Melbourne Airport during 2015.

Fix the ‘pain points’ for travellers, Joyce urges the government

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has called on the Australian Government to reduce the cost of multi-year entry visas which are about to be made available to Chinese travellers. The visa will cost $A1,000, while Chinese nationals pay just $A30 for a similar visa to Singapore. Joyce has also proposed reducing queues at customs and immigration at Australian airports.

Sydney Airport passenger growth predicted to lag

Moody’s says Brisbane and Melbourne airports are best placed to benefit from stronger international growth, while the international passenger growth rate at Sydney has fallen behind forecasts. It remains Australia’s main international gateway, but Melbourne and Brisbane are experiencing better growth rates because of new services to those airports. Moody’s says airports with a greater reliance on domestic travellers, such as Perth and Adelaide, face a more challenging outlook in passenger volume trends.

Big airports flunk service: report

The quality of services offered at Australia’s major airports declined in 2014. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission writes in the annual "Airport Monitoring Report" that Brisbane offered "good" service while the service provided by Melbourne, Perth and Sydney airports were "satisfactory". Car parking fees are a significant source of revenue for the airports. Sydney Airport earned more than $A88 million from parking fees in 2013-14
