Most of the people that will be using the Western Sydney Airport when it opens in 2026 will come from its immediate catchment area, so good accessibility is important. Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue chairman Christopher Brown told the annual Centre for Aviation annual conference on 1 August that Western Sydney was the only urban centre of its size in the world without an airport, and that there will be three million people living in the airport’s catchment area by the time it opens. Board of Airline Representatives of Australia executive director Barry Abram said a rail link to Western Sydney Airport would probably be its best transport option.

Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher says he is very optimistic that the Western Sydney Airport will be a success when it opens for business in 2026. Fletcher, who was speaking at a business lunch on 20 November, noted that its rival Sydney airport, Kingsford Smith, will at some point run out of capacity. The federal government is building and paying for the $A5.3 billion airport. Fletcher said he was aware of overseas airports such as Madrid’s Mirabel that had been opened but then ended up closing because people did not want to use them, so it was important that Western Sydney Airport had a very strong business plan.

The Australian Government’s May 2017 Budget will include funding for the proposed Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek, which is slated to cost between $A5bn and $A6bn. The Government has also signalled that it will seek a buyer for the new airport after it becomes operational. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has emphasised the airport’s contribution to the economy and growth in jobs. Australian-listed Sydney Airport has ruled out developing the airport, citing the high level of risk associated with the project.
