The former Coalition government’s offshore detention regime for asylum seekers is under renewed scrutiny following the release of sworn evidence given by the Department of Home Affairs’ assistant secretary Derek Elias. It has been revealed that Elias raised concerns about the waste and misuse of taxpayers funds via the so-called Pacific Solution policy in evidence given to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in his claim for workers’ compensation. The federal government has yet to release a report on the offshore processing regime by the nation’s former director-general of security, Dennis Richardson.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has committed to repealing the medivac legislation if the Coalition wins the 2019 election and has sufficient numbers in parliament to do so. The federal government will strengthen its border protection policies – including re-opening the detention centre on Christmas Island – in the wake of its historic defeat over the medivac bill. Labor has downplayed concerns that the medivac legislation will prompt a new wave of asylum-seekers, stressing that it applies solely to refugees who are currently on Manus Island and Nauru.

Transfield Services and Wilson Security were not properly accountable to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection in the running of a detention centre on Nauru, a Senate inquiry has found. It said the centre was not run well, prompting the Australian Greens to call for Transfield and Wilson to be dumped as providers of government services there. However, Transfield’s shares rose nine per cent to $A1.17 after the company reported its contract for running the Nauru centre as well as one on Manus Island had been renewed for five years.

HESTA manages super savings of doctors, nurses, and other workers in the healthcare and community services sectors. Many of its members are concerned about reports of mismanagement in offshore detention centres.
