The former Coalition government is under scrutiny over its awarding of contracts to provide offshore processing facilities for asylum-seekers on Nauru. The Senate estimates committee has queried why the Coalition had failed to disclose that it had renewed a contract with Mozammil Gulamabbas Bhojani’s Radiance International group after the businessman had been convicted of bribing two Nauru government officials. Radiance’s contract was worth $17.5m, and continued to be paid until May 2022, nearly two years after Bhojani was given a suspended jail sentence. Its initial contract in 2016 was worth $2.5m, and had been disclosed on the AusTender website.

The left faction of the New South Wales branch of the Australian Labor Party will seek to have its current asylum-seeker policy abolished at its upcoming state conference. The left faction wants federal Labor to back the immediate closure of the Manus Island and Nauru detention facilities, with all their occupants to be moved to mainland Australia for processing. Labor’s opposition spokesperson for border protection and immigration Shayne Neumann is strongly against the proposal.

Transfield Services and Wilson Security were not properly accountable to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection in the running of a detention centre on Nauru, a Senate inquiry has found. It said the centre was not run well, prompting the Australian Greens to call for Transfield and Wilson to be dumped as providers of government services there. However, Transfield’s shares rose nine per cent to $A1.17 after the company reported its contract for running the Nauru centre as well as one on Manus Island had been renewed for five years.
