Ten Network administrator KordaMentha has postponed the release of a report on the failed TV broadcaster until 4 September. The report was initially slated to be released on 31 August, and the delay will affect the timing of a creditors’ meeting. Ten’s shareholders will not recoup any of their investment if CBS Corporation buys Ten, which has prompted the Australian Shareholders’ Association to consider a class action on behalf of investors.

The local launch of the CBS All Access subscription video-on-demand service is likely to be a key part of the strategy of Ten Network’s new owner. The fee-based service is expected to complement Ten’s existing "catch-up" streaming service, and CBS intends to make its TV shows available online a week after they are broadcast on Ten’s linear channels. CBS may also seek Australian sports broadcasting rights for its streaming service.

Media laws gift Ten from News to CBS

Original article by Max Mason
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 14 : 29-Aug-17

The deal for US-based CBS to acquire Ten Network will not require changes to cross-media ownership laws, unlike the rival bid from Lachlan Murdoch and Bruce Gordon. The deal only requires approval from Ten’s creditors, a court and the Foreign Investment Review Board. Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says the deal means cross-media ownership reforms are not necessary. Fairfax Media CEO Greg Hywood rejects Shorten’s claim that the proposed media reforms were primarily aimed at saving Ten, arguing that they are intended to ensure that the local media sector remains competition in a changing media landscape.

Brambles chairman Stephen Johns says that although Amazon will be a "disruptive force" for Australian retailers, its entry into the local market could present an opportunity for the logistics group. He adds that the AmazonFresh business in particular should benefit Brambles’ CHEP and IFCO pallet operations. Morgan Stanley says department stores are likely to be hardest hit by Amazon’s arrival in Australia.

Morgan Stanley forecasts that Amazon’s entry to the Australian market could slash Wesfarmers’ earnings by more than $A400m a year by 2026. The firm expects the Kmart and Target discount department stores to be more vulnerable than specialist retailers such as JB Hi-Fi. Morgan Stanley has reduced its valuation for Kmart and Bunnings, while it now has a zero valuation on Target. It share price target for Wesfarmers has been downgraded from $A41 to $A36.

Andrew McLeod of Morgan Stanley says Australian media groups as well as retailers are likely to be affected by Amazon’s entry into the domestic market. He says retailers accounted for 20-30 per of overall advertising expenditure in 2016, and competition from Amazon may prompt local retailers to reduce their ad spend. McLeod adds that retailers are among the biggest source of ad revenue for TV networks, and the "Amazon effect" could prompt some retailers to shift more of their ad spend from traditional media to online.

US-based e-commerce group Amazon will expand its presence in Australia over the next several years, with a focus on low prices, fast deliver times and a wide range of merchandise. A new report from Morgan Stanley notes that Amazon already boasts annual sales of $A1bn in Australia, while some retail analysts believe that local retailers’ earnings could be slashed by around 50 per cent if Amazon opts to offer a full service in Australia. Amazon has commenced the process of recruiting a local CEO, while it is also scouting potential locations for distribution warehouses.

Data from Roy Morgan Research shows that Amazon boast a 50 per cent share of online retail sales in the US.

Amazon has declined to comment on speculation that its Prime Video subscription video-on-demand service could be launched in Australia in November 2016, to coincide with the global debut of "The Grand Tour". The program is hosted by former "Top Gear" presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. Amazon may opt to delay the local launch of its SVOD service until 2017, to enable it to build up a larger range of original and licensed content.
