Retirees urged to tap into home equity

AustralianSuper CEO Ian Silk says the superannuation fund may seek to offer a broader range of retirement income products in coming years. This could include home equity release products, which allow homeowners to capitalise on the value of their home without the risks associated with reverse mortgages. Silk concedes that there are significant problems with some retirement income products that are currently available, and says the industry must work hard to address the issue.

Retirement lump sum could end

The financial system inquiry’s recommendation that future retirees should not receive a superannuation lump sum payout may be implemented. The Department of the Treasury’s executive director John Lonsdale addressed the Australian Securities & Investment Commission’s annual conference on 24 March 2015. He raised the prospect of new rules that would require superannuants to finance their retirement via a default pension fund rather than a lump sum payout

Challenger lifts interim dividend

Listed financial services group Challenger has posted a 2014-15 interim normalised net profit of $A155m, which is five per cent lower than previously. Assets under management rose by 17 per cent to $A57.2bn, and shareholders will receive an interim dividend of $A0.145 per share. Challenger aims for growth of 11-13 per cent in sales of its annuity products for 2014-15
