Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the Israeli airstrike that killed Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom and six of her colleagues was "completely unacceptable". Albanese discussed the botched airstrike with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, stating that he told Netanyahu that Australians are outraged by the tragedy; he also demanded full accountability for the incident, in which three humanitarian aid vehicles in Gaza were targeted by Israeli drones. Foreign Minister Penny Wong has reiterated the federal government’s call for a ceasefire in Gaza and a two-state solution; however, Jewish community leaders in Australia are concerned that a ceasefire would leave Hamas in control of Gaza.

‘Murderous rampage’: Malaysian PM attacks Western leaders over hypocrisy on Israel, Ukraine

Original article by Matthew Knott
The Sydney Morning Herald – Page: Online : 8-Mar-24

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has used a speech to the Australian National University to accuse Western nations of selectively applying international law. He said that they have been happy to condemn Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, but have been equally happy to remain silent over the ongoing bloodletting "of innocent men, women and children of Gaza; he also claimed that much of the West has been happy to allow the "Israeli occupation forces" carte blanche in the murderous rampage on the Palestinians" for more than 60 years.

Australia, Canada and NZ warn Israel against catastrophic Rafah ground offensive

Original article by Daniel Hurst
The Guardian Australia – Page: Online : 16-Feb-24

The prime ministers of Australia, Canada and New Zealand have said a joint statement that Israel must "listen to its friends" and not mount a ground offensive on Rafah. Anthony Albanese, Justin Trudeau and Christopher Luxon stated such an offensive would be "catastrophic" and "devastating", with there being "simply nowhere else for civilians to go". Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has committed to an offensive on Rafah in order to destroy Hamas and rescue hostages, but only after civilians are allowed to leave the "battle zone". However, he has not yet stated where they would be permitted to go, and what safeguards, if any, would be put in place to protect them.

Labor urged to recognise Palestinian state without further delay after Israeli PM’s rejection of two-state solution

Original article by Daniel Hurst, Paul Karp
The Guardian Australia – Page: Online : 24-Jan-24

The federal government has consistently supported a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently ruled out this option. Izzat Abdulhad, who is the head of the general delegation of Palestine to Australia, says the federal government should both express disappointment at Netanyahu’s position and recognise the State of Palestine without further delay. He adds that the government should also adopt the position of the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, who has contended that a two-state solution may need to be imposed from outside in order to achieve peace.

‘We don’t accept’ genocide case: Wong

Original article by Yvonne Ball, Jess Malcolm
The Australian – Page: 5 : 17-Jan-24

Foreign Minister Penny Wong says the federal government respects the independence of the International Court of Justice and its role in upholding international law. However, she has emphasised that this does mean that Australia accepts the premise of South Africa’s case of genocide against Israel in the ICJ. Wong also notes that Australia is not currently a party to the genocide claim, and that the ICJ has not yet sought international submissions on the case. Wong held talks with Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi in Amman on Tuesday, which will be followed by two days of talks in Israel. She will meet survivors of the 7 October Hamas terrorist attacks, although she will not visit the sites where the attacks occurred.

Albanese says Australia will not participate in ICJ case against Israel and instead focus on political solution

Original article by Daniel Hurst
The Guardian Australia – Page: Online : 16-Jan-24

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Australia will not take part in the International Court of Justice proceedings initiated by South Africa, which is accusing Israel of genocide as a result of its bomdardment of Gaza. Speaking as foreign affairs minister Penny Wong set off on a trip to the Middle East, Albanese said Australia would instead focus on a ‘political solution’ to the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Wong is due to visit both Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories during her Middle East visit; she will meet with survivors of the 7 October Hamas attack while in Israel, but will not visit the communities in southern Israel where the attacks were carried out, for which she has been criticised by the Zionist Federation of Australia

Red Sea attacks risk imports, oil

Original article by Jenny Wiggins, Jacob Greber, Sarah Jones, Mark Mulligan
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 5 : 20-Dec-23

The price of crude oil briefly rose by four per cent on Tuesday, in response to ongoing attacks on Red Sea shipping by Houthi rebels. However, the oil price retreated after oil companies indicated that they will temporarily cease using the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden corridor. Acting Opposition Leader Sussan Ley says petrol prices may rise, given that the trade route through the Red Sea is critical to oil supplies. Meanwhile, US Studies Centre CEO Mike Green has warned that the loss of access to the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea will have a "very significant economic impact" on the entire Indo-Pacific region. The cost of importing goods into Australia is likely to rise, at a time when industrial action at DP World terminals is already causing delays in unloading container ships.

The Australian, New Zealand and Canadian governments have condemned the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on 7 October. Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 30-Nov-23

Now 49% of Australians say the Australian Government should ‘not take sides’ in the current crisis in Israel and Gaza, according to a special Roy Morgan online survey conducted in conjunction with the Islamic Society of South Australia. This compares to 19% who say the Government ‘should do more to support Palestine’ and 17% who say the ‘Australian Government should do more to support Israel’; 15% of respondents don’t know. The survey also found that 39% of Australians say the Government is ‘favouring the Israelis’ compared to only 10% who say the Government is ‘favouring the Palestinians’. Meanwhile, 80% of Australians say Hamas should return the Israeli hostages unconditionally, while 40% of Australians say the Israeli army should withdraw their armed forces from Gaza immediately and 33% say they should not. This special Roy Morgan online survey was conducted with an Australia-wide cross-section of 1,006 Australians aged 18+ from Thursday November 16 to Monday November 20.

Israel using a non-existing right, says UN

Original article by Jess Malcolm, Joe Kelly
The Australian – Page: 5 : 15-Nov-23

The United Nations’ Special Rapporteur for the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, addressed the National Press Club in Canberra on Tuesday. She contended that Israel has no right to self-defence in retaliation for the 7 October terrorist attacks because Hamas is an "armed group" within Israeli-occupied territory rather than another state. Albanese also accused Israel of committing war crimes in Gaza and said that Western countries such as Australia are "almost completely paralysed" in response to the war.
