The Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance has expressed concern about the impact of artificial intelligence technology on Australia’s creative sector. The MEAA has told a Senate committee that Australian creatives’ work is being "systematically scraped" to train AI platforms without their knowledge, consent or compensation. Amongst other things, the MEAA contended that AI firms should be legally required to disclose all data used to train their algorithms. Singer and songwriter Dr Rod Davies warned that AI could kill off Australia’s music industry.

Backlash to ABC cuts grows as artists, authors and performers urge rethink

Live Performance Australia has written to ABC chair Ita Buttrose urging the public broadcaster to reconsider its decision to disband its stand-alone arts team as part of a restructuring program. The peak body for the live entertainment industry contends that scrapping the two specialist editorial roles will have a "damaging impact" on the coverage of Australian arts and culture. The National Association for the Visual Arts’ executive director Penelope Benton says the move does make sense given that interest in the arts in Australia has never been higher.

Tanking arts and entertainment sector to get $250m support package

The federal government will announce details of a $250m coronavirus rescue package for the arts and entertainment sector on 25 June. The package will provide grants and low-interest loans to businesses and cultural institutions in a sector that has been hard-hit by the coronavirus lockdown. Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the package will provide financial assistance for all people in the sector, including those who build stage sets and develop computer-generated special effects, rather than just actors and performers.

The credits roll for arts and recreation productivity score

New data from the Productivity Commission shows that Australia’s arts and recreation industry achieved an 8.2 per cent increase in labour productivity in 2013-14. In contrast, there was a modest fall in productivity in the mining, construction and manufacturing industries. Meanwhile, the output of arts and recreation companies increased by 2.6 per cent, despite a 5.6 per cent decline in labour.
