Trade Minister Don Farrell says he plans to work with other countries to try to offset the potential impact that Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs are likely to have on global trade. Farrell met with the World Trade Organisation’s recently re-appointed director-general Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on the sidelines of an economics conference in Singapore on Monday, with the two reaffirming the need to maintain free and fair trade, while he has indicated Australia will stress the expensive military purchases it is making from the US as part of the AUKUS treaty to make the case that Australian commodities should escape US tariffs.

Two federal parliament committees are examining the proposed 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership. Andrew Hudson of the Export Council of Australia has told the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties that Australia must ratify the trade agreement, as failure to do so would bolster the protectionist movement, which he noted is gaining support in many parts of the world. However, the Electrical Trades Union has argued against ratifying the trade deal.

Australia’s Trade Minister Andrew Robb is confident that a deal on the proposed Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) will be finalised in the last week of July 2015, after five years of negotiations. Robb says the nation’s agricultural sector is set to benefit from the TPP, but he adds that the biggest beneficiaries could include service industries such as the legal and education sectors. Robb also expects the mining equipment and services sector to benefit from the deal.

HSBC Bank has issued a new study commissioned from the Economist Intelligence Unit, on the impact of the nine free trade agreements (FTAs) Australia has entered into since 2005. The results of the research show that the bilateral deals have been used by a mere 19% of export-focused businesses to boost their trade with the other nations. Among the reasons is the legal complexity of the FTAs, which contributes to widespread ignorance among companies of the available improvements
