Japan rises to second-biggest trade partner

New figures show that Japan has again become Australia’s second-biggest trading partner, having relinquished this status to the US in 2015-16. There was an 18 per cent increase in Australian exports to Japan in 2016-17, while the total value of two-way trade between Australia and Japan rose by 13 per cent to $A69bn. Two-way trade between Australia and the US totalled $A66bn. The figures also show that Australia exported a total of $A63bn worth of iron ore in 2016-17, ahead of coal ($A54bn) and education services ($A28bn).

Price struck for thermal coal export a ‘huge coup’

Australian thermal coal producers have secured an annual contract price of $US61.60 per tonne from Japanese buyers for the financial year that began on 1 April 2016. While this is 9.1 per cent lower than the $US67.80 for the previous Japanese financial year, Macquarie Wealth Management notes that it is about $US10.80 per tonne higher than the spot price. Australian shipments of thermal coal to Japan totalled 84.7 million tonnes in 2015.

$500m yearly drop in tariffs on Japan goods

The Australian Government’s mid-year Budget update shows that the free trade agreement with Japan will reduce revenue from tariffs by $A100m in 2014-15 and $A1.59bn over the next four years. The Budget update also forecasts that China’s economic growth will slow to 6.5 per cent in 2016, while India’s economy will grow by six per cent

Speed-up plan for Japan deal

The free trade agreement between Australia and Japan was slated to begin on 1 April 2015. Both nations are keen for the trade deal to begin earlier, possibly in February. This could result in the tariff on beef exports being reduced on the starting date for the deal and again at the beginning of Japan’s financial year on 1 April.
