Some 81 local councils shifted the date of their citizenship ceremonies in 2024 via federal government’s laws that allow them to be held within three days on either side of 26 January. Opposition leader Peter Dutton has indicated that he would be open to formally legislating 26 January as the national holiday if the Coalition wins the upcoming election. Dutton has also urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to "stand up to mayors" whose local councils refuse to hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day. There is growing support for Dutton’s stance on Australia Day amongst many mayors, including some in federal seats that are held by Labor or independents.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton said on Monday that he would reinstate the requirement for councils to hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day within the first 100 days of a Coalition government. Commenting on Dutton’s declaration, the Australian Local Government Association’s president mayor Matt Burnett said there were a number of reasons why councils did not hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day, including costs and extreme heat. Adelaide Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith said it would comply with any government directive to hold ceremonies on Australia Day, but that it might need to ask for compensation to cover any additional costs.

Albanese backs sports bodies’ Australia Day snub

Original article by Rhiannon Down
The Australian – Page: 3 : 23-Jan-24

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the nation needs to stop looking for areas in which "we can be outraged". With Cricket Australia and Tennis Australia not to acknowledge Australia Day at the Gabba Test or the Australian Open on Friday, Albanese refused to back calls by NSW Premier Chris Minns for the two sporting bodies to reconsider their decision. Opposition leader Peter Dutton says Albanese needs to stand up as the leader of our country and tell Cricket Australia and other "corporate wokes" that we should be celebrating Australia Day, while Nationals Leader David Littleproud says it is not the job of sporting codes to "set the moral compass".

Original article by Sarah Ison
The Australian – Page: 3 : 16-Jan-24

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Opposition leader Peter Dutton needs to clarify his stance on Woolworths after the retail giant advised that it will not stock Australia Day-themed merchandise. Albanese says Dutton should specify whether his call to boycott Woolworths is only meant to apply until after the national holiday or should be ongoing. Albanese adds that the boycott would presumably also apply to Kmart and Aldi, and notes that the three retailers collectively employ about 200,000 people, so Dutton should explain the impact of his proposed boycott on their jobs.

Australia Day ceremonies to be made compulsory

Original article by Greg Brown
The Australian – Page: Online : 14-Jan-19

Prime Minister Scott Morrison will force local councils to hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day, while he will also introduce a dress code for ceremonies. Morrison has rejected Labor leader Bill Shorten’s claim that the government was trying to politicise Australia Day, with his action following the decision of some councils not to hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day out of respect to indigenous Australians. Shorten noted that 530 of Australia’s 537 councils hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day, while he said he had no plans to change Australia Day from 26 January if Labor wins the next election.

Triple J moves Hottest 100 from Australia Day

Original article by Broede Carmody
The Age – Page: 3 : 28-Nov-17

Radio station Triple J will no longer count down its 100 top songs of the year on Australia Day, announcing on 27 November that it would move the Hottest 100 to the fourth weekend in January. Triple J stated a survey of listeners had found that 60 per cent had supported the change of date. The decision was initially prompted by an online petition started in August, with Triple J asked to move the Hottest 100 from Australia Day out of respect to Indigenous Australians. The Greens have welcomed the change, but federal Minister for Communications Mitch Fifield said he was "bewildered" by the change in date.
