The federal government has finalised a new defence agreement with its Indonesian counterpart during an official visit by president-elect Prabowo Subianto. Amongst other things, the two nations will hold more joint military exercises and increase maritime security co-operation, as part of a push to counter Chinese’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Prabowo, who is currently Indonesia’s Defence Minister, says he wants to strengthen the nation’s ties with its neighbours. Defence Minister Richard Marles will formally sign the agreement in Indonesia next week.

Indonesia’s decision to suspend military co-operation with Australia seems to be related to teaching materials found by Indonesian soldiers on a base in Perth. Apparently, the soldiers objected to the Indonesian national philosophy Pancasila not being treated with due reverence. Indonesians also believe that Australians are inclined to support an irredentist movement in West Papua. Australian Defence Minister Marise Payne is keen to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Australian Defence Minister Marise Payne has issued a statement about Indonesia’s decision to suspend military co-operation with Australia. According to Payne, suspension applies only to certain areas of defence cooperation between the two countries but Indonesian armed forces spokesman Major General Wuryanto said all forms of cooperation had been suspended. Wuryanto stated technical reasons were behind the suspension.
