PM deepens Japan defence ties

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull met with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on 18 January, with trade and defence at the top of the agenda. They have announced plans to hold a joint military exercise for the two nations’ air forces in Japan later in 2018. They also agreed to a range of other measures aimed at strengthening defence relations, while their respective trade ministers will establish a ministerial economic dialogue. Meanwhile, Turnbull said signs of improved relations between South Korea and North Korea will not necessarily lead to denuclearisation on the Korean peninsula.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will meet with members of Japan’s National Security Council during a brief visit to Japan on 18 January. Turnbull will discuss issues such as joint military training exercises and Japan’s measures to protect civilians from the threat of terrorist attacks on its public transport system. Turnbull will also address Japanese and Australian business leaders during his trip, and he will call for action to finalise the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Defence pact to lead way for joint submarine venture

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe will in the week starting 7 July 2014 sign a new defence treaty. One of the results may be a joint program for the construction of advanced submarines. The US Government is believed to be strongly in favour of Australia collaborating with Japan in this area. The closer military ties are being flanked by a new Economic Partnership Agreement between the two nations, and both deals may cause friction with the Chinese Government

Japan visit will mark new era

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit Australia and hold talks with Prime Minister Tony Abbott on 8 July 2014. During the official visit a new free trade agreement will be ratified that had been finalised in April. There will also be closer military ties between the two nations, including a deal to share defence technology. Abe will travel on to look at iron ore mining operations in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The last Japanese prime minister to come to Australia had been Junichiro Koizumi in 2002
