Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the federal government undertook a "very robust and very consultative" process to select the members of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s two new boards. Professor Renee Fry-McKibbin and former Bendigo Bank CEO Marnie Baker will join four of the RBA’s current external board members on the new interest-rate setting board, which will also include governor Michele Bullock, deputy governor Andrew Hauser and Treasury secretary Steven Kennedy. Current board members Carol Schwartz and Elana Rubin will join the RBA’s governance board.

Sam Mostyn will be officially sworn in as Australia’s 28th governor-general on 1 July. The federal government has revealed that Mostyn will receive an annual salary of $709,000 in her new role. Outgoing Governor-General David Hurley has been paid just $495,000 annually, although his salary was reduced because he also received a military pension during his five-year term. However, National Party MP Keith Pitt says the big pay rise for Mostyn is inappropriate during a cost-of-living crisis.

Coalition fury as former Liberal minister and new climate chair rejects nuclear power

Original article by David Crowe
The Sydney Morning Herald – Page: Online : 25-Jun-24

The federal government is under scrutiny after advising that Matt Kean will succeed Grant King as chairman of the Climate Change Authority. Kean is a former NSW Liberal treasurer and energy minister, who has expressed opposition to adding nuclear power to Australia’s energy mix. Kean says nuclear energy would have bankrupted his state due to the cost and length of time to build nuclear power stations. The federal Opposition is yet to disclose the likely cost of the seven nuclear power plants that it plans to build if it wins the next election.

Bullock backs Chalmers in RBA stoush with Coalition

Original article by Michael Read
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 4 : 20-Mar-24

Treasurer Jim Chalmers wants the Coalition’s support for legislation to overhaul the Reserve Bank of Australia, as he does not want to negotiate with the Greens. The Coalition is concerned that Chalmers wants the RBA existing board members to be appointed to its new governance board so he can "stack" the interest rates-setting board with people who are aligned with Labor. RBA governor Michelle Bullock says she would like "continuity with respect to both boards", but adds that she has no firm views on just how many current board members should serve on each of the new boards.

Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry CEO James Pearson says the Fair Work Commission’s new deputy presidents should be given the same duties as their colleagues, including deciding cases. FWC president Iain Ross recently advised that the five Coalition appointees will initially only handle relatively minor matters such as conciliation work. Shadow employment minister Brendan O’Connor has supported Ross’s stance, but a spokesman for Industrial Relations Minister Kelly O’Dwyer says all FWC members should be involved in duties such as conciliation work.

The federal government appointed six new deputy presidents to the Fair Work Commission in late 2018. Such appointees traditionally hear full bench cases, but FWC president Iain Ross has told members of the commission that most of the deputy presidents will only handle relatively minor matters such as conciliation work. The majority of the new appointees have an employer background, which prompted Labor to accuse the government of "stacking" the FWC.

The federal government has advertised the position of Fair Work Ombudsman, but incumbent Natalie James is keen to continue in the role. She says the FWO has secured record penalties during her initial five-year term, which expires in July. Labor’s Brendan O’Connor says the role of FWO should be given to someone whose priority is combatting the exploitation of workers, rather than an "anti-worker warrior". James was appointed by the former Labor government.

Labor vetoes ASIC chair

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 10 : 13-Oct-17

Credit Suisse Australia chairman John O’Sullivan will not seek to become chairman of the Australian Securities & Investments Commission. He had been regarded as a leading contender to succeed Greg Medcraft, but he has cited "personal attacks" and insinuations by the Australian Labor Party for his decision to withdraw his candidacy. Labor had alleged that his appointment at ASIC would not be appropriate given his links to the Liberal Party and the so-called "Ute-gate" scandal in 2009. The Government in turn has argued that Medcraft was a former Labor party member and had been appointed by a Labor government without going through a formal selection process.
