The Australian Government’s cabinet ministers have endorsed a proposal to add a so-called "effects test" to the Competition and Consumer Act. The reform was one of 56 recommendations made by the Harper review of competition laws, and is supported by the Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry. However, the Business Council of Australia maintains that an effects test would adversely affect competition and make companies more vulnerable to litigation.

Tony Smith and Andrew Southcott are regarded as the leading contenders to succeed Bronwyn Bishop as the Speaker in the House of Representatives. A ballot will be held by Liberal Party MPs to choose her successor when Parliament resumes in mid-August 2015. Liberal MPs have insisted that Bishop’s replacement be chosen by the party room rather than Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Meanwhile, Abbott has announced a review of the parliamentary entitlements system in the wake of the expense scandal.

Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten wants the Speaker of the lower house to be independent in future, in the wake of Bronwyn Bishop’s resignation over an expenses scandal. He also says Prime Minister Tony Abbott should reveal whether Bishop had been offered any incentives to step down. Meanwhile, Abbott has revealed plans for a sweeping review of parliamentary entitlements, while there is speculation that Bishop’s resignation may prompt a ministerial reshuffle in order to appoint a new Speaker.

Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 27-Jul-15

A multi-mode Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention has found that support for Australia’s ruling Liberal-National Coalition on a two-party preferred basis has fallen by three per cent to 46 per cent. The poll, which was carried out on the weekends of 18-19 and 25-26 July 2015, also shows that the Coalition’s primary vote has fallen by 2.5 per cent to 39 per cent, while the Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has risen by 0.5 points to 91 points. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says the Coalition Government has no alternative but to show the electorate how it will grow the economy and provide more jobs, and the answer is not a higher GST or an increase in the Medicare levy.

The Federal Government’s proposed superannuation reforms have been criticised by Industry Super Australia in its submission to Assistant Treasurer Josh Frydenberg. The reforms will require one-third of super fund directors, and the chairman, to be independent, while employers and unions will no longer need to have representatives on the board. ISA argues that under the current governance model industry funds’ returns have generally been higher than those of retail funds.
