Menzies Research Centre director Nick Cater has criticised the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining & Energy Union’s proposed enterprise bargaining agreement with subcontractor Gabba Waterproofing. It includes a First Nations People clause, which amongst other things requires the subcontractor to hold ‘welcome to country’ ceremonies when the number of workers on the North Queensland Stadium project reaches 20. Cater says the CFMMEU’s demands are all about union turf wars rather than Aboriginal land rights. The EBA was lodged with the Fair Work Commission in July.

Ken Wyatt, Minister for Indigenous Australians, has told the National Press Club that the federal government intends to establish an indigenous voice to parliament. Wyatt also said he will push ahead with separate plans for a referendum to recognise indigenous people in the Constitution, and that he will seek to develop a model that will have the support of all sides of politics and the general public. Linda Burney, the shadow minister for indigenous Australians, says Labor is of the view that the indigenous voice should be enshrined in the Constitution.

The former MD of the ABC, Maurice Newman, has accused many left-leaning media outlets of racism, including the public broadcaster. Newman also claims that SBS, Fairfax Media, The Guardian and Crikey are also racist, due to their coverage of Aboriginal issues. His comments follow claims by Aboriginal leader Noel Pearson that the ABC is racist, a view that is supported by the head of the Prime Minister’s Indigenous Advisory Council, Warren Mundine.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has confirmed that department store chain David Jones has made a savvy move by recruiting recently retired indigenous AFL player Adam Goodes as one of seven new brand ambassadors. The survey, which was carried out in the year to June 2015, shows that 78.1 per cent of Australians aged 14+ who shop at DJs in an average four weeks agree that "Aboriginal culture is an essential component of Australian society". This compares with 73.1 per cent of Australians aged 14+ overall.
