Wintawari Guruma Aboriginal Corporation chairman Glen Camille has welcomed a new joint venture with Fortescue Metals Group. For its part, FMG chairman Andrew Forrest says the $500 million joint venture to co-manage the development of iron ore mines in Western Australia’s Pilbara region is the largest ever contract signed with an Indigenous business organisation, and that it will expand on FMG’s Billion Opportunities program, which has awarded over $3.5 billion in contracts to Aboriginal businesses and joint ventures since 2011.

No more welcome to country for Rio Tinto, Indigenous owners say

Original article by Lorena Allan

The Eastern Guruma people have told Rio Tinto that they will no longer perform ‘welcome to country’ ceremonies at any of its events or any events that it sponsors. They have also refused to have any meetings with Rio Tinto for at least three months. The Eastern Guruma people are angry with Rio Tinto after it was revealed that priceless cultural materials rescued from their sacred sites were thrown in a rubbish tip in the 1990s, and that Rio did not tell them of the error. Forty per cent of Rio’s Pilbara mine holdings in Western Australia are on Eastern Guruma traditional lands.

BHP blasted by Indigenous elder amid WA impasse

Some Western Australian Indigenous leaders claim new legislation aimed at preventing a repeat of Rio Tinto’s 2020 destruction of the 46,000-year old Jukaan Gorge heritage site offers even less heritage protection, and they are seeking veto power over mining developments in WA. One such leader is Banjima elder Slim Parker, who has attacked BHP over the time it is taking to investigate damage to a culturally important cave at one of its mines on Banjima country. The WA government is not willing to allow Indigenous leaders veto powers over mining developments, while the WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy also opposes the idea.

Doubts raised on mine job numbers

Data from the 2016 Census shows that just 907 of the 8,000 Aboriginals who live in the Pilbara region currently work in the iron ore industry. In contrast, Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Fortescue Metals Group claim that they employ about 1,850 Aboriginal people in the Pilbara. Perth-based lawyer Franklin Gaffney says the census figures give credence to claims that Aboriginal employment numbers in the mining sector are being inflated. He has proposed independent monitoring of native title agreements to ensure that companies are meeting their targets for employing indigenous people.

The Yawuru Native Title Holders Aboriginal Corporation has rejected a push by the listed Buru Energy for access to traditional lands in order to carry out hydraulic fracturing. However the company already has the necessary exploration permits, while there is no right for the Yawuru people to force talks under the Native Title Act. Buru has signalled it wants to co-operate with the traditional owners on the shale gas exploration, and has stressed the positive effect on job creation and affordable gas supplies in Western Australia. Buru is setting the pace among groups trying to tap the Canning Basin unconventional gas region
